Chapter 28 - The Ghost in the Server

"What is that?" Mercer demanded, letting go of Olivia and stepping toward the secondary monitor. "The server was wiped. We fried the micro-scaffolds!"

"We dissolved the active implants," Olivia said, rising slowly to her feet, wiping her eyes with the sleeve of her scrubs. "But the mainframe... it's transmitting an outbound data packet."

Victor Sterling’s expression had transformed from smug arrogance to sheer, unadulterated panic. "That’s not my code," he whispered, genuinely horrified. "Arthur... Arthur Vance set a dead-man switch. If I failed to maintain the bi-hourly heartbeat signal from Geneva, the raw data isn't deleted—it’s auctioned."

"Auctioned to whom?!" Reynolds barked, shoving Sterling against the wall.

"To the dark-pool syndicate," Sterling stammered, his arrogance completely shattered. "Biotech cartels. Black-market pharmaceutical investors in Macao, Dubai, and Moscow. The complete genetic blueprints, the frequency codes, the list of every infant ever screened as a potential carrier... it's all going public on the shadow web."

Olivia leaned over the console. The progress bar was already at forty percent. Names, addresses, and pediatric hospital IDs were flashing across the screen at lightning speed.

"They’re not just selling the technology," Olivia gasped, horror gripping her anew. "They’re selling the targets. Every child who possesses the rare neural receptor gene that makes them compatible with the implant—their files are being packaged and sold as pre-screened biological assets!"

"Can we abort the upload?" Mercer asked, typing frantically.

"It's routing through a decentralized peer-to-peer node network," Olivia said, her medical instincts translating the terrifying tech jargon. "It’s like an uncontrollable sepsis infection spreading through the global bloodstream. If that file hits the dark web, those families will never be safe. Mercenaries and black-market clinics will hunt those children for the rest of their lives."

"There has to be a master server node," Mercer insisted. "Where is the physical hub hosting the primary seed file?"

Olivia scanned the routing IP addresses flashing across the prompt. Each node leaped through proxies in Stockholm, Tokyo, and Panama, but every single digital thread converged on a single physical coordinate.

"It’s not in Europe," Olivia said, her blood running cold as she recognized the municipal server prefix. "It’s back home. It’s inside Chicago Memorial."

"That’s impossible," Reynolds countered. "We had the Department of Justice sweep Chicago Memorial three days ago!"

"They swept the medical wards!" Olivia shouted, spinning around. "They didn't sweep the abandoned Victorian wing—the old St. Jude’s foundation building sealed since 1974!"
