Chapter 6 - Whispers in the PICU

Olivia freeze-framed her hand over the secondary IV line. Her trained nurse's eye followed the transparent tubing up to a small, unlabeled hundred-milliliter piggyback bag hanging behind the saline flush.
"Dr. Mercer," Olivia whispered, her voice dropping to a sharp, icy cadence. "Nobody touch this IV."
Dr. Mercer instantly picked up on the warning in her voice. He stepped around the bed and examined the unlabeled fluid. "Who hung this? The telemetry log doesn't show any secondary orders."
"Neither do the nursing notes," Olivia said, her pulse thumping against her ears. She pulled a sterile clamp from her pocket and snapped it shut over the tubing, cutting off the fluid before it could enter Ethan’s bloodstream. "Someone bypassed the barcode verification system. If this had reached his central line..."
Richard Cole snapped his head toward the door, his eyes bloodshot with protective fury. "Someone tried to poison my boy right here in the ICU? Where are those damn federal marshals?!"
"Agent Vance!" Olivia called out into the hallway.
Agent Vance entered swiftly, hand instinctively resting on his service weapon. Within seconds, the room was sealed. Forensics technicians from the field office bagged the mysterious solution. A quick bedside chemical test revealed a concentrated dose of potassium chloride—a lethal cardiac arrest agent that would have made Ethan look like he had suffered sudden heart failure secondary to his brain injury.
"Check the security footage for the PICU hallway from the last fifteen minutes," Agent Vance barked into his radio. "Now!"
The radio crackled back: *"Agent Vance, the north corridor camera was looped twelve minutes ago. We’ve got an unauthorized badge swipe registered to Dr. Sterling’s confiscated credentials at the service stairwell!"*
"He’s still in the building," Vance shouted, sprinting out the door into the corridor with his agents drawn.
Olivia stayed glued to Ethan’s bedside, her hand holding his left wrist, constantly monitoring his pulse. She could feel the boy's steady, rhythmic heartbeat beneath his warm skin. Ethan had fought too hard; he had survived a massive clot, an emergency craniotomy, and corporate greed.

"Nurse Olivia?" Ethan whispered softly, his big brown eyes looking up at her with complete, unshakeable trust. "Am I gonna be able to ride my bicycle again?"
Tears pricked Olivia's eyes, but she gave him the warmest, brightest smile she could muster. "You bet you are, Ethan. In fact, you're going to ride that bike all over your neighborhood, and I'm going to make sure nobody ever hurts you again."
