Chapter 8 - The Paper Trail Unfolds

By Monday morning at 8:00 AM, the Delaware County Courthouse was enveloped in a light dusting of fresh snow.

Thomas Vance, looking formidable in his pinstripe suit, walked beside Dad, Ethan, and me up the wide granite steps. Behind us walked a team of two forensic accountants whom Thomas had retained over the weekend.

Inside Courtroom 3B, Judge Harrison presiding, Diane and Chloe were already seated at the defense table.

Diane looked exhausted, her heavy makeup failing to mask the dark hollows under her eyes. She wore a black tailored dress, clearly trying to project the image of a grieving, wronged matriarch. Chloe sat beside her, nervously scrolling through her phone, which was likely still pinging with backlash from the public exposure.

At their side sat Richard Miller, Diane’s long-time divorce and probate attorney—a man who looked distinctly uncomfortable to be in the room.

"All rise," the bailiff called out.

Judge Harrison, a no-nonsense jurist in her late fifties, took the bench and adjusted her spectacles, looking over the thick stack of emergency motions filed by Thomas.

"We are here on an emergency petition to reopen probate in the Matter of the Estate of Evelyn Marie Vance," Judge Harrison began, her tone brisk and sharp. "Mr. Vance, present your preliminary findings."

Thomas stood up, projecting his voice with practiced authority.

"Your Honor, three years ago, Diane Vance submitted a fraudulent 2018 draft of the Evelyn Vance Trust, suppressing a sealed codicil executed on November 14, 2020. She forged the signature of co-executor Arthur Vance to bypass statutory notice requirements. Furthermore, during this three-year period, Diane Vance diverted seven hundred and twenty thousand dollars in commercial lease proceeds from Parcel 14B in Powell into Chloe Vance’s personal enterprise."

Thomas gestured, and our forensic accountant handed copies of the certified bank ledgers directly to the judge’s clerk.

Diane’s attorney immediately stood up, sweating under his collar. "Your Honor! My client vehemently denies intentional wrongdoing! There were administrative oversights during a period of intense familial grief—"

"Administrative oversights, Mr. Miller?" Judge Harrison interrupted, her gaze freezing him where he stood. "Forging an executor's signature on a court-certified probate filing is an administrative oversight? Diverting hundreds of thousands of dollars into an unregistered boutique is grief?"

Judge Harrison flipped through the forensic audit, her expression growing darker with every page.

"Mrs. Vance," the judge turned her piercing stare directly upon Diane. "Do you have any documentation contesting the validity of the 2020 codicil bearing your mother’s notarized signature?"

Diane stood up, her voice trembling with forced indignation. "Your Honor, my mother was not in her right mind! Emily manipulated her during her final days! Emily poisoned her against me!"

"Mrs. Vance, sit down," Judge Harrison warned sharply. "The notary public on this 2020 codicil is Mr. Harold Finch, a respected member of the Ohio Bar for forty years. Are you accusing Mr. Finch of executing an incompetent client’s will?"

Diane opened her mouth, but Richard Miller frantically tugged at her sleeve, whispering sharply in her ear until she sank back into her chair, white-faced and trembling.

"Based on the overwhelming prima facie evidence of fraud and concealment," Judge Harrison ruled, banging her gavel with a resounding crack, "this court orders the immediate reopening of the Evelyn Vance Estate. Parcel 14B in Powell is placed into a constructive trust under the sole authority of Emily Vance. Furthermore, all accounts associated with C.V. Luxe Concept LLC and Diane Vance’s discretionary funds are frozen pending a full forensic audit."

Chloe let out an audible sob, burying her face in her hands.

"Additionally," Judge Harrison added, looking straight at Diane, "this matter is hereby referred to the Delaware County Prosecutor’s Office for investigation into forgery, fraud, and perjury."

Bang. The gavel struck again.
