Chapter 6 - The Confrontation in the Marble Hall

Thomas closed the metal lid of Box 412 with a definitive snap. "Margaret, please alert your security personnel. Arthur, Emily, Ethan—stay behind me."

We walked out of the vault corridor into the polished marble lobby. Diane was standing by the teller counter, her designer fur trim coat disheveled, her face flushed with blotchy red rage. Beside her stood Chloe, clutching a designer handbag like a weapon, her mascara slightly smeared from crying.

When Diane saw me holding Grandma Evelyn’s leather-bound journal, her eyes flared with pure venom.

"You!" Diane shrieked, taking two aggressive steps forward before the bank’s armed security guard stepped into her path, his hand resting calmly on his belt. "Put that down! That is my mother's private property! You have no right to touch anything in this bank!"

"Actually, Diane, she has every right," Thomas said, stepping forward with an icy, authoritative stillness that stopped my mother dead in her tracks.

Diane blinked, the color draining from her cheeks as she recognized her estranged brother-in-law. "Thomas? What... what are you doing here? You retired years ago."

"I came out of retirement to fix a gross miscarriage of justice that you engineered," Thomas said evenly. "We have the original 2020 codicil, Diane. We have Evelyn’s diaries detailing your extortion at her deathbed. And we have the wire transfers proving you embezzled over seven hundred thousand dollars from the Powell commercial trust into Chloe’s LLC."

Chloe let out a sharp gasp, whipping her head toward Diane. "Mom! You told me that money was from an anonymous angel investor! You said it was a grant!"

"Shut up, Chloe!" Diane snapped wildly, losing every shred of her polished country club composure. She rounded on Dad, her voice cracking into a desperate screech. "Arthur! Are you going to let your brother and this spiteful, ungrateful girl destroy our family? Tell them to hand over those papers! We can settle this at home!"

Dad looked at Diane, not with anger, but with an expression of profound, unshakable disgust.

"We don't have a home, Diane," Dad said quietly. "We have a stage where you performed your vanity plays at the expense of our daughter's sanity. You spat in Emily’s face at Christmas dinner. You degraded her, you lied about her, and all the while, you were stealing the inheritance Evelyn left for her."

"She didn't deserve it!" Diane yelled, completely unhinged now, heedless of the bank staff watching in stunned silence. "Emily was always stubborn! She never listened to me! Chloe represents this family! Chloe has social status! What does Emily have? Some pathetic graphic design firm?"

"My 'pathetic' design firm is currently valued at three times Chloe’s boutique, Mom," I said, stepping past Thomas until I was standing directly across from her. For the first time in my life, I felt no fear looking into her eyes. The towering monster of my childhood was nothing more than a pathetic, insecure fraud. "And starting Monday, your allowance ends. Chloe’s lease on the High Street storefront is canceled. And every cent you took from Grandma’s trust will be repaid to the last penny."

"You can't do that!" Chloe cried, stomping her heel against the marble. "My spring line launches in two weeks! I have influencers booked! If you cut off the account, I'm ruined!"

"Then you had better find a real job, Chloe," Ethan spoke up, his voice dripping with cool authority. "Because as legal counsel for Vance Design, I am filing an immediate freezing injunction on all linked accounts. The party is officially over."

Diane lunged toward me, her manicured nails clawing for the journal in my hands, but the security guard instantly caught her wrists, forcing her back.

"Ma'am, step back right now or you will be arrested for assault and trespassing," the guard ordered firmly.

Diane breathed heavily, her hair falling across her forehead, her pristine facade shattered into ugly, ragged pieces. She looked at Dad, then at me, realizing with sickening certainty that her reign of terror was dead.

"You'll regret this, Emily," Diane whispered, her voice dripping with venomous malice. "I will burn this entire family to the ground before I let you have one cent."

"You've already burned it down, Diane," I replied calmly. "We're just here to sweep away the ashes."
