Chapter 12 - The Ruin of Chloe’s Empire

While our groundbreaking made headlines across Central Ohio, the collapse of Chloe and Diane’s affairs accelerated with brutal legal efficiency.

That evening, back at our newly renovated Powell design studio, Ethan slid a set of legal filings across the kitchen island.

"The Delaware County Prosecutor just issued formal indictments," Ethan said, pouring two glasses of celebratory wine. "Grand larceny, four counts of uttering forged documents, and two counts of tax evasion against Diane Vance. Her arraignment is set for next Tuesday."

"And Chloe?" I asked, taking a sip.

"Chloe’s boutique filed for Chapter 7 liquidation this afternoon," Ethan replied. "Her creditors called in four hundred thousand dollars in defaulted promissory notes. Because Diane’s accounts are frozen, Chloe had to surrender her leased sports car and move into a studio apartment off Campus."

For a fleeting second, a twinge of pity flickered in my heart. Chloe was my sister, after all. But then I remembered the cruel smirks, the years of complicity, the video she posted trying to ruin my life, and the way she cheered when Diane spat in my face.

She hadn't been an innocent victim; she had been a willing accomplice who reveled in the cruelty until the bill came due.

"Has either of them tried to reach out?" Dad asked, walking into the kitchen with a plate of fresh pasta he had spent the afternoon cooking.

"Chloe texted me an hour ago," I admitted, showing Dad the message.

*Emily. Please. Mom is facing actual prison time. They're going to take everything. If you drop the restitution demand, Mom won't have to plead guilty to felonies. We're sisters. You can't let your own mother go to jail.*

"What did you tell her?" Dad asked gently.

"I didn't answer," I said. "Because the courts aren't my weapon; they're the law. If Diane goes to prison, it's because she committed crimes, not because I refused to hide them for her."

"That's my girl," Dad said, clinking his glass against mine. "To clean slates and honest lives."

We toasted, the warm fire crackling in the hearth, feeling the pure, untainted peace of a family healed from poison.
