Chapter 3 - The Cell and the Camera
The Fulton County Jail smelled of sulfur, industrial bleach, and cold fear.
Courtney Lawson sat on the edge of the metal bench inside the interrogation room, her knees pulled tightly to her chest. Her mascara had run in black, greasy tracks down her cheeks, ruining her airbrushed makeup. The silk blouse she had worn so proudly to the baby shower was wrinkled and stained with sweat. One of her Christian Louboutin shoes was missing—confiscated as physical evidence by the forensics unit—leaving her with one bare foot resting on the frigid concrete floor.
"Arthur, why am I still here?" Courtney wailed, her voice shrill and trembling as the door clicked open.
Arthur Sterling stepped into the room, followed immediately by Patricia. But the triumphant, untouchable matriarch who usually controlled every room she entered looked visibly frayed. Her hair was slightly disheveled, and her designer coat was buttoned crookedly.
"Be quiet, Courtney," Arthur snapped coldly, setting his briefcase down on the metal table. He didn't sit. He looked at the twenty-four-year-old girl with unvarnished disgust. "The microphones in this facility are always recording. Keep your mouth shut until I tell you to open it."
"Mom!" Courtney pleaded, reaching for Patricia. "Tell him to get me out! They put me in a holding cell with... with criminals! Real criminals! Some woman tried to take my earrings! I can't stay here tonight, Mom! I have an appointment for my microblading tomorrow, and I can't sleep on that awful metal bed!"
Patricia reached out and gripped Courtney’s hands, but her fingers were trembling.
"The magistrate refused bail, Courtney," Patricia whispered, her voice tight with strain. "The hearing was held two hours ago. Arthur tried everything. He offered the Buckhead house as collateral. The judge denied it."
Courtney froze, her jaw dropping. "Denied bail? For what? It was a family fight! Sisters fight all the time!"
"You didn't get into a catfight over a sweater, Courtney," Arthur said, opening his briefcase and pulling out an iPad. He placed it squarely in front of her. "The district attorney just upgraded your charges. You are not facing simple battery. You are being charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Aggravated Battery resulting in Great Bodily Harm, and Attempted Feticide."
Courtney turned pale as chalk. "Attempted... what? The baby isn't even a real person yet! It was seven months! And it was sick anyway!"
"Shut up!" Arthur snarled, his fist slamming onto the table with a crack that made both women jump. "Do you have any concept of the legal catastrophe you have created? Look at this!"
Arthur tapped the screen of the iPad.
A high-definition video played.
It was Marcus’s recording. The camera angle was crystal clear, capturing the entire dessert table. It showed Courtney grabbing the microphone, laughing her high, cruel laugh, and holding up the ultrasound paper. It caught Patricia’s mocking chuckle: *“Only an idiot would keep a baby like that.”*
Then, the camera zoomed slightly as Elena stood up, pale and shaking.
The video showed Courtney pausing, deliberately shifting her weight, looking directly at Elena’s rounded stomach, and executing a vicious, driving front-kick with her pointed four-inch stiletto. The sickening *thud* of the impact was picked up by the high-end microphone Marcus had used for his video camera.
The video showed Elena flying backward, the blood instantly blooming through her skirt, and Courtney stepping back with a cold, triumphant smile before the room exploded into chaos.
"This video was posted to Instagram and TikTok three hours ago," Arthur said, his voice deadly quiet. "It has thirty-two million views. It has been shared by national news outlets, viral outrage pages, and every major domestic abuse advocacy group in the United States. The Governor’s office has already received over fifty thousand emails demanding the Fulton County DA prosecute you to the absolute maximum extent of the law."
Courtney stared at the screen, her eyes bulging. "Thirty... thirty-two million?"
"People are doxxing your internship," Arthur continued relentlessly. "They revoked your offer forty minutes ago. Your sorority has officially expelled you. And the crowd of protesters gathering outside the courthouse right now is so large that the sheriff’s department had to deploy riot barricades."
"Mom!" Courtney turned to Patricia, her voice rising into an ear-splitting shriek. "Fix this! You always fix this! Pay Marcus! Give him half a million dollars to say the video is an AI fake! Pay the judge! You have the trust fund!"
Patricia’s face drained of what little color it had left.
"The trust fund is frozen, Courtney," Patricia said, her voice shaking violently.
"What?" Courtney gasped.
"Elena... Elena filed an emergency injunction through Daniel’s firm three weeks ago, before the shower," Patricia admitted, her voice dropping to a terrified whisper. "When your father died, his will stipulated that the five-million-dollar estate was to be held in trust for both girls, with Elena as the primary executor once she turned thirty. I... I had been moving funds out of Elena’s half into your accounts to cover your credit card debts and your condo in Midtown."
Arthur closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose in sheer exasperation. "Patricia, tell me you didn't commit grand larceny and fiduciary fraud on top of this."
"I am their mother!" Patricia defended herself hysterically. "My husband intended for Courtney to be taken care of! Elena was always so stubborn, so independent, she didn't need the money! But when Daniel requested an audit for their mortgage application, the bank caught the discrepancies. The probate court froze every single asset this morning pending a criminal forensic audit!"
Courtney sat on the bench, completely paralyzed.
For her entire life, money and her mother’s relentless coddling had been an invisible shield. She had crashed luxury cars, cheated her way through private schools, bullied classmates into clinical depression, and stolen from her own sister—and Patricia had always smoothed it over with a check, an expensive gift, or a threat to anyone who dared complain.
Now, the shield had shattered. The money was gone. The world was watching. And she was sitting in a cinderblock cell with one shoe and blood on her hands.
"What... what happens if I'm convicted?" Courtney whispered, her voice finally breaking into raw, unadulterated terror.
Arthur picked up his iPad and closed his briefcase.
"Under Georgia law, Attempted Feticide carries a mandatory minimum sentence of ten years and a maximum of thirty," Arthur said flatly. "Aggravated assault with a deadly weapon carries another twenty. If that baby dies in the neonatal intensive care unit, Courtney... the charges will be amended to Malice Murder."
Courtney let out a choked scream, burying her face in her hands.
"I won't represent you," Arthur added, stepping toward the door. "This is no longer a civil trust matter. It is a capital criminal proceeding, and quite frankly, the evidence against you is ironclad. I’m resigning as your family counsel effective immediately."
"Arthur! You can't leave us!" Patricia shouted, lunging toward the door as the guard opened it.
"Watch me, Patricia," Arthur said, looking back at her one last time. "And if you want my final piece of free advice: go to the hospital, get on your knees, and pray that your granddaughter survives. Because if that child takes her last breath, your daughter will spend the rest of her natural life in a cage."

The heavy steel door slammed shut, locking the mother and daughter inside their self-made hell.
