Chapter 2 - Code Crimson
The trauma bay at Grady Memorial Hospital smelled of iodine, rubbing alcohol, and ozone.
Consciousness flickered in and out like a dying fluorescent bulb. Bright overhead surgical lamps flared above me, stark and blinding. Voices shouted in rapid-fire medical jargon over the rhythmic, frantic beeping of cardiac monitors.
"Blood pressure is crashing—sixty over forty!"
"Start two large-bore IVs! Hang two units of O-negative on the rapid infuser!"
"Where is Dr. Vance? We need an emergency crash C-section now! She’s in disseminated intravascular coagulation if we don't get this uterus evacuated!"
Hands were everywhere. Needles bit into my veins. Someone was shaving my abdomen, cold antiseptic splashing across my skin, freezing against the burning internal agony.
"Elena, squeeze my finger if you can hear me." A woman’s face leaned into my peripheral vision. She wore a blue surgical cap and clear protective goggles spattered with tiny droplets of saline. "I’m Dr. Vance, your trauma surgeon. You have a massive placental abruption from the impact. Your baby is in severe distress, and you are bleeding internally. We have to take her out right this second under general anesthesia. Do you understand?"
"Grace..." The plastic tube in my mouth muffled the word into a pathetic moan. "Save... my baby..."
"We are going to do everything humanly possible," Dr. Vance promised, her eyes grim and unwavering. "Count down from ten for me. Ten... nine..."
The sweet, chemical sting of the anesthetic rushed through my IV line.
Before the black void pulled me under completely, a strange, disjointed memory flashed behind my eyelids: Courtney at sixteen, intentionally knocking my high school graduation cake off the kitchen counter because the frosting wasn't her favorite color. And our mother, sweeping up the ruined sugar while stroking Courtney’s hair, whispering, *It’s alright, my angel. Elena shouldn't have made it all about herself anyway.*
Patricia had spent twenty-four years pruning Courtney’s cruelty like a prize rose, feeding it until it grew thorns thick enough to kill.
*Not my baby,* I thought fiercely into the descending dark. *You don't get to kill my baby.*
Then, the world vanished.

Outside the double doors of the surgical suite, Daniel sat on the cold linoleum floor of the waiting corridor, his head in his hands.
His clothes were ruined. The blood on his sleeves had dried to a dark, rust-colored crust, but the palms of his hands were still tacky with it. He hadn't washed them. He refused to step away to the sink, terrified that if he left his post, the universe would take the opportunity to snatch Elena away forever.
Heavy footfalls echoed down the hall.
Daniel looked up, his bloodshot eyes narrowing.
Patricia was walking toward him. She was accompanied by a tall, sleek man in a charcoal Italian suit carrying a leather briefcase—Arthur Sterling, the Lawson family’s private trust attorney.
Patricia had refreshed her lipstick. The sheer audacity of it struck Daniel like a physical blow. She had actually stood in front of a mirror, painted her lips coral, and brought her lawyer to the hospital before she even knew if her eldest daughter was alive.
"Daniel," Patricia said, stopping five feet away and resting a manicured hand on the strap of her designer handbag. "How is she?"
Daniel stood up slowly. His height—six foot two—cast a long, dark shadow over her. His hands curled into tight, trembling fists at his sides.
"You have thirty seconds to turn around and walk out of this hospital before I throw you down that stairwell," Daniel said, his voice flat, devoid of humanity.
Arthur Sterling stepped forward smoothly, raising a placating palm. "Mr. Harper, let’s keep our tempers in check. This is an unfathomable family tragedy. Mrs. Lawson is Elena’s mother. She has a right to be here, and we need to discuss how this will be handled with the police."
"Handled?" Daniel let out a hollow, terrifying laugh. He stepped directly into Arthur’s personal space, forcing the attorney to take a startled step backward. "Your client’s daughter kicked my pregnant wife in the stomach with a steel heel. She severed the placenta. Elena is on that table right now having her belly cut open because Courtney tried to murder her own niece!"
"That is a reckless and defamatory accusation!" Patricia hissed, dropping the veneer of calm. Her eyes narrowed into slits. "Courtney was terrified! Elena charged at her! The microphone picked up Elena threatening her right before the fall!"
"The microphone picked up Courtney laughing about my baby being disabled!" Daniel roared, loud enough that a nurse at the central nursing station picked up her security phone. "And fifty people watched Courtney kick her! It’s on video, Patricia! Half the room had their phones out recording the cake cutting! Marcus recorded the whole damn thing!"
A flicker of genuine panic crossed Patricia’s face for the briefest fraction of a second, but she instantly masked it with icy condescension.
"Marcus is an employee at your firm, Daniel. His footage is biased and easily challenged," Patricia said coldly. "Courtney is currently being held at the central precinct without bail. She is twenty-four years old! She has an internship at a marketing firm starting next month! If this goes to trial, her entire life will be ruined over an emotional accident!"
"Her life?" Daniel stared at her, completely uncomprehending of the monster standing before him. "What about Elena’s life? What about our daughter?"
"Elena was carrying a damaged child anyway!" Patricia snapped, her voice vibrating with venomous disgust. "You saw the scans two weeks ago! The doctor said the ventricles were enlarged! The child was going to be an invalid, a drain on your finances, an embarrassment to our family name! Courtney did what any rational person would have wanted to happen! She just had the guts to act on instinct!"
The corridor went dead silent.
Even Arthur Sterling turned his head slightly, staring at Patricia with a look of profound, professional unease.
Daniel didn't yell. The rage inside him suddenly crystallized into something ancient and absolute.
"Thank you, Patricia," Daniel whispered.
Patricia blinked, momentarily caught off guard. "For what?"
"For saying that out loud."
Daniel reached into his breast pocket and pulled out his phone. The screen was illuminated. The red recording dot on the voice memo app had been pulsing since the moment she walked down the hall.
"Officer!" Daniel called out.
Two hospital security guards and an Atlanta police detective who had been waiting near the elevators immediately marched over. The detective, a burly Black woman with graying hair and an iron badge that read *Det. K. Miller*, fixed Patricia with a look of cold contempt.
"Mrs. Lawson," Detective Miller said, pulling a pair of handcuffs from her utility belt. "Arthur, you might want to advise your client to shut her mouth right now. Because I just heard every single word of that."
"I am Elena Harper’s mother!" Patricia shrieked, backing away as the security guards flanked her. "You cannot ban me from this hospital!"
"I'm the patient’s husband," Daniel said, his voice cutting through her panic like an iron gate slamming shut. "And I have medical power of attorney. Detective Miller, trespass her from this building. If she sets foot on this floor again, arrest her."
"With pleasure, Mr. Harper," Detective Miller said, grabbing Patricia’s arm firmly. "Come on, ma'am. Let’s go discuss obstruction and witness intimidation downstairs."
"Daniel! You will regret this!" Patricia screamed as she was dragged toward the elevators, her heels scuffing the floor, Arthur frantically whispering legal caveats beside her. "I have the money! I have the lawyers! Courtney will walk, and you will have nothing!"
The elevator doors slid shut, cutting off the screech of her voice.
Daniel sank back against the wall, sliding down until his knees hit his chest. He clutched his phone against his heart, his whole body shaking with dry, silent sobs.
A moment later, the pneumatic doors of the surgical unit hissed open.
Dr. Vance walked out. Her surgical gown was splattered with blood. Her mask hung loose around her neck.
Daniel scrambled to his feet, his heart stopping completely. "Doctor?"
Dr. Vance took a deep breath, looking straight into Daniel’s desperate eyes.
"We had to perform an emergency vertical hysterectomy to control the maternal hemorrhage," she said softly. "Elena lost four liters of blood. We had to resuscitate her twice on the table."
Daniel’s knees buckled. "Is she... is she alive?"
"She is alive," Dr. Vance said, reaching out to grip Daniel’s shoulder with fierce strength. "She is in the surgical ICU, heavily sedated, but she is stable. She fought like a lioness, Mr. Harper."
"And... the baby?" Daniel choked out the question, terrified of the answer.
Dr. Vance’s expression shifted, a tiny, fragile light breaking through her exhaustion.
"She has an incredible will to live," Dr. Vance whispered. "We got her out within four minutes of incision. Her APGAR scores were nearly zero at birth, but the neonatal resuscitation team got a heartbeat. She is three pounds, four ounces. She’s in the level-four NICU right now on high-frequency oscillation."
"She’s alive?" Daniel wept, collapsing against the doctor. "My baby girl is alive?"
May you like
"She’s alive, Daniel," Dr. Vance said, her own eyes misting over. "She’s fighting for every breath. But she is alive."
