Chapter 14 - The Motion Ambush

Courtroom 5A was packed to capacity when Judge Carolyn Vance took the bench at nine-thirty the next morning.

The tension in the mahogany-paneled room was thick enough to choke on. On the defense side of the aisle, Courtney sat between Holloway and his co-counsel, dressed in a muted gray county jumpsuit, her hands shackled to a leather belly chain. Gone was the immaculate blowout and the sneering entitlement; her blond hair hung limp and unwashed around her hollow cheeks, her eyes darting nervously toward the gallery where sketches artists worked feverishly.

Two seats down, Patricia sat under armed guard, having been transported from the women’s holding annex. She looked frail, her manicured facade crumbling into dry, papery wrinkles, but her eyes flashed with cold malice whenever she looked toward the prosecution’s table.

Daniel sat right beside me in the front row of the gallery, his hand locked tightly around mine.

“Your Honor,” Holloway began, rising with sweeping theatricality and adjusting the lapels of his suit. “The defense moves for an immediate suppression of the cell phone video recorded by Marcus Bennett, as well as an order barring the State from introducing speculative medical characterizations regarding the fetus’s condition prior to the alleged incident.”

Holloway turned slightly toward the gallery, casting a contemptuous glance across the room before addressing the judge.

“The State’s case is built on hysteria, your Honor. My clients have been subjected to an unprecedented media circus. The video is prejudicial, unauthenticated, and does not capture the clear verbal provocation initiated by the complaining witness, Elena Lawson Harper. Furthermore, we demand that Baby Grace’s pre-incident ultrasound records be released to our medical experts to prove that no criminal harm was inflicted upon a healthy pregnancy.”

Judge Vance adjusted her glasses, peering down at Holloway like a schoolteacher inspecting an unruly student. “Mr. Holloway, are you suggesting that a pregnant woman invited physical violence upon her own abdomen?”

“I am suggesting, Your Honor, that this was a chaotic mutual altercation between sisters!” Holloway thundered smoothly. “A tragic domestic accident blown completely out of proportion by an aggressive district attorney!”

ADA Sarah Sterling rose slowly from the State’s table. She didn't raise her voice. She didn't shout. She simply placed a thick stack of blue-bound evidentiary folders onto the lectern.

“May it please the court,” Sterling said, her voice clear, resonant, and chillingly precise. “The State has no objection to examining the question of premeditation and intent. In fact, we welcome it. Which is why early this morning, the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office filed a superseding indictment against both defendants.”

Holloway froze mid-stride. Courtney jerked her head up, her eyes widening in sudden panic.

“A superseding indictment?” Holloway stammered. “On what grounds?”

“On the grounds of evidence recovered yesterday afternoon pursuant to a lawful search warrant executed at Storage Unit 414 in Marietta,” Sterling continued, turning directly to face Holloway. “An off-the-books facility rented by defendant Courtney Lawson under an alias, containing over three million dollars in stolen trust assets, and most importantly, Courtney Lawson’s handwritten diary.”

A collective gasp swept through the gallery. The press pool erupted into frantic, furious scribbling.

Courtney’s face lost every drop of color. She lunged forward against her restraints, her chains rattling violently against the wooden table. “Holloway! Stop her! She can’t read that! You said they couldn't find that!”

“Silence your client, Mr. Holloway!” Judge Vance warned sharply, striking her gavel with a resounding crack.

Sterling didn't blink. She opened the top folder and read directly from the authenticated transcripts:

“*‘If Elena has a child, the trust documents trigger an automatic custodial review... We cannot let that audit happen. The doctor saw an irregularity on the preliminary scan. Perfect. Mother says we can use this to humiliate her... If she fights, we crush her.’*”

Sterling looked up, her gaze locking onto Courtney’s trembling form.

“This was not a domestic accident, Your Honor. This was an assassination attempt disguised as a family argument, designed to silence an heir and prevent the discovery of a multi-million-dollar grand larceny. Under Georgia Code 16-5-1, the State hereby elevates the charges against Courtney Lawson to Attempted Murder with Premeditation. And we charge Patricia Lawson as a co-conspirator to Attempted Murder.”

Courtney let out a choked, hysterical shriek, collapsing sideways against Holloway’s arm. Holloway stood frozen, his mouth opening and closing uselessly as his defense strategy evaporated into thin air before the entire press corps of the American South.

Judge Vance’s eyes were like black ice.

“Defendant’s motions are denied in their entirety,” Judge Vance ruled, her gavel falling like a guillotine. “Superseding indictments are accepted. Trial is set for January eighth. Both defendants remain remanded without bond.”
