Chapter 14 - Cold Harbor

Harper stepped out from behind the heavy iron winch, stepping into the glaring glare of the halogen spotlight mounted on the crane platform.

The gunfire instantly stopped.

Down on the wet asphalt fifty feet below, Salvatore Castiglione stood beside the open door of an armored Cadillac Escalade. Three surviving Corsican gunmen flanked him, their automatic weapons trained directly on her chest.

Salvatore stared up at her. In the harsh white light, his face was a portrait of madness, rage, and disbelief.

"Clara..." Salvatore breathed, the cigar falling from his lips into a puddle of fuel-stained water. "You look just like her. The same insolent eyes. The same stubborn chin."

Harper stood at the edge of the steel catwalk, her hands resting calmly on the railing, projecting an aura of absolute majesty. She looked down at the man who had destroyed her family with the cold detachment of an empress looking at a cockroach.

"My mother was ten times the man you will ever be, Salvatore," Harper’s voice rang out across the silent wharf, carrying over the rhythmic lapping of the river tide. "She died with her dignity. You are about to die in the mud of a port you stole."

Salvatore let out a shrill, hysterical bark of laughter.

"Stole?! I built this!" he screamed, gesturing wildly at the towering cranes and the idle freighters. "Enzo was weak! He wanted to leave it all to a woman! To a girl who ran away with an artist and lived like a dog! I took what was mine! And now, little girl, you’re going to join your mother in an unmarked grave!"

Salvatore raised his gold-plated .45 automatic, aiming it directly at Harper’s forehead.

"Kill her!" Salvatore shrieked to his men.

Before a single Corsican could pull a trigger, the shadows behind the crane's gantry exploded.

Dominic leaned out from the upper maintenance beam, fifty feet higher than Salvatore anticipated. His sniper rifle barked in rapid, terrifying succession.

*Crack! Crack! Crack!*

The three Corsican gunmen dropped where they stood, pierced through their chest plates before their brains could register the sound.

Salvatore flinched in horror as his men crumpled to the asphalt. He looked up, panic finally cracking through his arrogant facade.

He fired two wild shots toward the crane, the bullets ricocheting harmlessly off the heavy steel beams.

Harper drew her 9mm, took two calm steps down the maintenance stairs, and fired three precise shots.

The first round struck the front left tire of the Escalade, blowing it to shreds. The second round took out the driver's side engine block. The third round punched cleanly through the flesh of Salvatore’s right shoulder.

Salvatore screamed, dropping his gold gun into the dirt, clutching his bleeding arm as he stumbled against the side of the ruined vehicle.

From the darkness of the pier, Lucas and eight tactical operators closed in like wolves, their laser sights painting Salvatore’s chest with a dozen lethal red dots.

Dominic rappelled down from the catwalk, landing on the wet concrete with a heavy, fluid crouch. He rose to his full height, his suppressed rifle lowered, his eyes fixed on Salvatore like an executioner approaching the block.

Harper walked down the final flight of stairs, her boots striking the pavement with deliberate, rhythmic authority.

Salvatore fell to his knees in the cold rain that was just beginning to fall. He looked up at Harper, his face twisted in agony, blood seeping through his fine cashmere coat.

"You can't touch me," Salvatore hissed through gritted teeth, spitting blood onto Harper’s boots. "The syndicate... the five families... they won't let a bastard girl rule the docks. The Corsicans... they will come for you! The Obsidian Syndicate will drown you in your own blood!"

Harper stopped two feet in front of him.

She reached inside her collar, pulled out the heavy silver pendant, and let the anchor and ivy dangle before Salvatore’s wild, failing eyes.

"The Castiglione bloodline ends with me, Salvatore," Harper said, her voice dropping into a register of icy, undeniable sovereignty. "I am not continuing your syndicate. I am not running your drugs, your extortion, or your human misery."

She looked back toward the end of the pier, where Lucas’s men were gently wrapping warm wool blankets around seventy-eight women and children, guiding them into heated emergency transport vehicles.

"The Castiglione ports will become legitimate commercial terminals," Harper declared, her hazel eyes locking onto Salvatore’s soul. "Every dollar stolen from my grandfather’s trust will be redirected to rebuild the lives of the people you destroyed. You are not a king, Salvatore. You were just a thief sitting in a dead man's chair."

Dominic stepped up beside Harper, his large hand coming to rest firmly against the small of her back. The warmth of his touch chased away the biting cold of the river wind.

"Federal marshals are at the gate, Harper," Dominic murmured softly, his voice for her alone. "The Southern District prosecutors are waiting. Do we hand him over, or do we finish this here?"

Harper looked down at her uncle—broken, bleeding, stripped of his wealth, his pride, and his power. To kill him here in the shadows would be mercy. To let him rot in a concrete federal cell, watching her dismantle his empire piece by piece on international television, was true justice.

"Arrest him," Harper commanded.
