Chapter 12 - Blood in the Ledger
The heavy iron door of the sub-basement archive groaned as Lucas shoved it open, revealing a temperature-controlled vault beneath the Castiglione Tower. Unlike the digital command hubs above, this room smelled of old paper, leather-bound registers, and dried ink.
Vincent Morreti had broken within three minutes. He hadn't given them Salvatore’s exact coordinates—Salvatore was too paranoid to trust anyone—but he had given them the ledger vault.
Harper walked between rows of steel shelving that stored sixty years of off-the-books transactions. Dominic stayed half a step behind her, his tactical flashlight cutting through the dimness, sweeping over thousands of bound ledgers.
"Why keep physical books in this day and age?" Harper asked, pulling down a thick black binder labeled *1998 - Port Operations*.
"Because cloud servers leave digital footprints for federal subpoenas," Dominic replied, standing close enough that she could feel the heat radiating from his chest. "Salvatore was old-school. He believed if it wasn't on the internet, it didn't exist."
Dominic stepped to a hidden safe built directly into the reinforced foundation wall. Using the mechanical override combination Morreti had surrendered under duress, Dominic spun the dial with practiced precision.
*Click. Clack. Thump.*
The heavy circular steel door swung open. Inside lay three black leather volumes embossed with the Castiglione double anchor, along with several burner phones and a stack of bearer bonds worth tens of millions.
Dominic pulled out the thickest volume and laid it across an iron inspection table under the overhead bulb. Harper stepped beside him, their shoulders brushing. The faint scent of cedar and Dominic’s expensive cologne enveloped her senses, steadying her racing heart.
They flipped through the yellowed pages. At first, it appeared to be standard syndicate extortion and contraband logistics: hijacked luxury vehicles, undeclared electronics, untaxed tobacco.
Then Harper’s fingers caught on an entry dated three weeks prior.
"Look at this," she whispered.
Dominic leaned in close, his jaw brushing against her hair.
The entry was written in Salvatore’s sharp, spidery handwriting:
*Project Black Trident. Consignment 884. Inbound vessel: The Leviathan. Carrier: Aegean Line. Arrival: New York Pier 54. Beneficiary: The Corsican Directorate. Total Advance: $120,000,000.*
Beneath the financial figures was a list of cargo contents. Harper felt the blood drain from her face.
It wasn't weapons. It wasn't money.
"Human cargo," Harper whispered, horror rising in her throat like bile. "He’s smuggling refugees and coerced labor through the Red Hook maritime corridor. Over eighty women and children locked inside sealed shipping containers."
Dominic’s gray eyes turned pitch-black with fury. His hand clenched into a fist against the steel table, the veins in his forearm bulging against his tailored cuffs.
"The Aegean Line is an unregistered shell company owned by the Corsican mafia," Dominic said, his voice dropping into a chilling register that promised absolute ruin. "Salvatore knew he was losing legal control of the trust. He was desperate. He borrowed one hundred and twenty million dollars from the Corsicans to fight our court injunctions, and he offered them safe passage through the Manhattan docks as collateral."
"When does *The Leviathan* dock?" Harper demanded, grabbing Dominic’s arm. Her hazel eyes burned with a ferocious, righteous fury that matched his own. "When?"
Dominic flipped the page.
"Tonight," Dominic said. "Midnight. At Pier 54."
Harper took a sharp breath. "If those containers clear the port under the Castiglione seal, my name will be on the customs paperwork. The federal marshals will consider me an accessory to human trafficking before I can even prove my innocence."
"That’s Salvatore’s final move," Dominic realized, his analytical mind assembling the puzzle with cold precision. "He knows he’s lost the fortune. He knows the courts will side with you. So he’s going to burn you down with him. If the port is raided tonight and eighty victims are found inside containers registered to Enzo Castiglione’s heir, your crown turns into a life sentence in a federal supermax."
Harper stood tall, her hands curling into steady, unbreakable fists.
"Then we don't wait for the feds," Harper said firmly.
Dominic looked at her, surprise flickering in his gaze before transforming into fierce, unbridled admiration. "Harper, Pier 54 is surrounded by private terminals. Salvatore will have at least thirty heavily armed mercenaries securing the perimeter to ensure the cargo unloads."
"And how many men do you have, Dominic?" she countered, stepping into his space, her eyes flashing with diamond-hard resolve.
"Enough to sack a small country," he answered without hesitation.
"Then bring them," Harper said softly, her fingers sliding up the lapel of his jacket until she was holding his gaze captive. "My mother spent her whole life running from this cruelty. She died penniless in a drafty apartment while Salvatore profited off misery. I am not running. We take Pier 54 tonight. We free those people, and we break Salvatore Castiglione’s neck."
Dominic stared down at her, his pulse thudding visibly in his throat. Slowly, reverently, his hands cupped her face, his thumbs stroking her high cheekbones.
"I have spent my whole life surrounded by killers, politicians, and cowards," Dominic murmured, his voice thick with raw emotion. "And then you walked into my house with a coffee pot and changed the world."
He bent his head and captured her mouth in a searing, possessive kiss. It wasn't gentle; it was fierce, desperate, and filled with the promise of blood and devotion. Harper parted her lips, meeting his passion with equal hunger, her fingers tangling into his dark hair, pulling him closer until there was no space, no air, and no doubt left between them.
When they finally broke apart, both breathing hard, Dominic’s eyes were ablaze with lethal purpose.
"Lucas!" Dominic roared without taking his eyes off Harper.
Lucas appeared in the vault doorway within seconds. "Boss?"

"Mobilize the strike team. Heavy tactical gear, suppressors, and breaching charges," Dominic commanded. "We hit Pier 54 at twenty-three hundred hours. Nobody calls the police. We settle this ourselves."
