Chapter 8 - Shattered Loyalties
The afternoon rain turned into a torrential downpour, rattling against the high windows of the estate's subterranean tactical vault. Down in the holding cells, Vivian Russo sat huddled on a wooden bench, her designer gown stained with grime, her platinum blonde hair unwashed and tangled. The arrogance that had defined her at the grand ball had curdled into bitter, venomous hatred.
The heavy iron door groaned as Marco entered the corridor, Sofia walking beside him. Sofia carried a secure tablet containing the decrypted communication logs extracted from Dominic’s phone.
When Vivian saw Sofia walking at Marco’s side—not as a servant, but as his closest confidante—her face twisted with ugly fury. She lunged against the steel bars, rattling them violently.
"You miserable little cleaning girl!" Vivian shrieked, her voice echoing down the stone corridor. "You think you’re someone now? You think Marco looks at you and sees anything other than a disposable pair of hands? You’re a peasant! When my father’s soldiers burn this house to the ground, I’m going to personally watch you bleed on the floor you used to scrub!"
Sofia didn't flinch. She stepped forward, stopping just an inch beyond Vivian’s reach, her gaze cool, composed, and completely unfazed by the heiress’s venom.
"Your father isn't coming to rescue you, Vivian," Sofia said calmly, tapping the tablet screen and turning it toward the bars. "An hour ago, Senator Russo authorized an airstrike protocol on Pier 42 if the exchange goes wrong. He classified you as an acceptable casualty in his memo to Moretti. He cares more about the Bellini shipping manifests than his own daughter."
Vivian’s face drained of all color. "That’s a lie! My father loves me! He built this alliance for me!"
"Your father built an alliance with Moretti to cover up twenty million dollars in embezzled campaign funds laundered through my uncle’s casinos," Marco said, his deep voice freezing the air in the cell. He stepped up beside Sofia, resting his hand possessively on the small of her back. The casual intimacy of the gesture struck Vivian harder than any physical blow. "You were never the mastermind, Vivian. You were just the pretty bait they used to place a viper in my bed."
Vivian gripped the iron bars, her knuckles white, tears of humiliation burning in her eyes. "Marco... please. We were going to rule this city together. I did what I had to do because you were weak after the bomb! You couldn't see! You were useless!"
"And yet," Marco murmured, leaning in slightly, his right eye piercing through her soul, "with one blinded eye and a maid by my side, I dismantled your entire conspiracy in less than twenty-four hours."
He turned away dismissively. "Leave her. Lorenzo will transport her to the pier as bait."
As they walked back through the quiet corridors toward Marco's private study, the adrenaline that had carried Sofia through the morning began to wear thin. A wave of exhaustion washed over her, making her stumble slightly on the threshold.
Marco caught her instantly, his powerful arm sweeping around her waist before she could fall. "Careful," he murmured softly.
"I’m sorry," Sofia whispered, resting her forehead against his chest for a brief second, breathing in the warmth of his body. "I haven't slept in two days. The fear... knowing that Leo was in danger... it’s all catching up to me."
Marco did not let her go. Instead, he lifted her gently into his arms, carrying her across the study to the plush velvet sofa before the fireplace. Sofia gasped at the sudden lightness, her arms instinctively wrapping around his neck.
"Marco, put me down, I can walk—"
"Rest, Sofia," Marco ordered tenderly, laying her down against the soft cushions. He knelt beside the sofa, his eyes searching her face with an intensity that made her breath catch. He reached up, gently unpinning her dark hair so that it cascaded over her shoulders in rich, silken waves. "You have fought harder than any soldier under my command. Let me carry the weight for a while."
Sofia looked up into his handsome face. The faint scar trailing from his brow across his left eyelid gave him a dangerous, feral beauty, but his expression right now held only profound reverence.
"Why are you doing this for me, Marco?" she asked, her voice a fragile whisper in the quiet room. "I’m just a maid. In the eyes of your capos, I don't belong here."
"To hell with the capos," Marco replied, his voice rough with emotion. He brought her small hand to his lips, kissing the center of her palm, his lips warm against her skin. "Before you caught me on that landing, I was living in a world of shadows, surrounded by traitors who smiled while sharpening their knives. You didn't just save my life, Sofia. You gave me back my soul. There is no woman in this city—no senator’s daughter, no syndicate princess—who possesses a fraction of your courage, your purity, or your grace."
Sofia’s heart fluttered wildly. She lifted her other hand, her fingertips tentatively tracing the rugged line of his jaw, feeling the slight roughness of his afternoon stubble. "Marco..."
Marco leaned forward, his gaze locked on her mouth. "If I survive tonight at Pier 42... if I bring an end to this war... I am not letting you walk away, Sofia Ramirez. I want you by my side. Not as my savior, not as my servant. As my equal. As the queen of this family."
Tears pricked Sofia’s eyes, not from fear, but from a profound, overwhelming joy that swept away years of hardship, poverty, and isolation. "Then you had better come back alive, Marco Bellini," she whispered fiercely. "Because I won't let anyone else have you."
Marco smiled—a brilliant, devastating smile that transformed his ruthless features—and leaned in to seal the promise. His lips captured hers in a deep, passionate kiss that tasted of fire, rain, and undeniable destiny. Sofia sighed against his mouth, running her fingers through his dark hair, pulling him closer as the world outside raged into storm.
When he finally pulled back, breathing heavily, his eyes burned with a dark, triumphant fire.

"Rest now, my sweet," he whispered, pressing a soft kiss to her forehead. "Tonight, we take New York."
