Chapter 4 - The Bloodstained Rose
The hidden access behind the mahogany bookshelf was narrow, smelling of old pine, stone dust, and copper pipes. Sofia led the way, holding the small tactical flashlight between her teeth while guiding Marco’s larger frame through the tight vertical passage.
Above them, heavy bootsteps pounded across the hardwood of Marco’s study. A burst of gunfire shredded the antique desk they had been standing next to barely ninety seconds earlier.
"They breached the study," Sofia whispered, her breath warm against Marco's neck as they squeezed onto the maintenance ladder leading down toward the sub-basement.
"Lorenzo’s men are engaging them in the east wing," Marco replied, his voice deadly calm even as sweat traced down the side of his temple. "Moretti sent at least a dozen men. They aren't here to capture anyone. This is an extermination."
Marco paused on the iron rung of the ladder, his left hand gripping the metal so hard his knuckles turned white. The darkness of the shaft, combined with the erratic flashes of tactical light from the hallway above, sent a violent wave of optical nausea through his brain. His depth perception failed; the rungs seemed to bend and float in the void.
He swayed, his boot slipping off the iron step.
Sofia reacted instantly. Dropping the flashlight into her apron pocket, she reached out with both arms, wrapping them tightly around Marco’s broad torso, pinning his chest against the ladder.
"I have you," she whispered fiercely into his ear. "I have you, Marco. Do not let go."
Hearing his first name on her lips, spoken not with deference, but with raw, desperate intimacy, seemed to shock Marco back into focus. The fog in his vision cleared slightly. He felt the rapid, courageous beat of her heart pressing against his ribs.
"You shouldn't be protecting me, Sofia," he rasped, his breath mingling with hers in the confined darkness. "I’m supposed to be the shield."
"You can be the shield when your eye heals," she countered, her voice trembling slightly but unwavering. "Right now, you're the target. Move your left foot down six inches. There's a landing."
Marco followed her guidance blindly. His boot struck solid stone. A moment later, both of them slipped through the low service door into the darkened laundry tunnels beneath the west wing.
The basement air was thick with the scent of damp concrete and detergent, but beneath it hung a sharper, deadlier odor: cordite and fresh blood.
Ahead of them, two men in black tactical vests, wearing night-vision goggles and holding suppressed submachine guns, were sweeping the corridor toward the vaults.
"Moretti's point men," Marco whispered, his instincts taking over instantly. He pulled Sofia behind an industrial laundry cart filled with heavy linen.
His vision in the dark was compromised, but his hearing was razor sharp. He listened to the rhythm of their footsteps on the damp concrete.
*One... two... three... pivot.*
"Sofia," Marco whispered, leaning close to her ear. "The mirror on the wall behind them. Can you see their reflection?"
"Yes," she breathed, peering through the gap in the laundry cart. "The one on the left is covering the vault door. The one on the right is reloading a magazine."
"Count to three," Marco said, raising the tactical shotgun over the edge of the cart. "Tell me when the one on the right lowers his weapon."
Sofia watched with unblinking intensity. The second mercenary dropped his empty magazine, reaching down to his belt.
"Now," Sofia whispered.
Marco rose like a shadow from the dark. Even without full depth perception, his muscle memory and Sofia’s precise timing were flawless. He fired twice.
The thunderous roar of the 12-gauge shotgun in the enclosed concrete tunnel was deafening. The first blast obliterated the mercenary on the right; the second caught the second man in the chest, hurling him backward into a stack of steel shelving.
Silence crashed back over the corridor, save for the clatter of spent shells bouncing across the floor.
Marco pumped another round into the chamber, then suddenly stumbled as a sharp pain flared behind his eye. He caught himself on the edge of the cart, his breathing heavy.
Sofia ran to the fallen mercenaries, checking their vests with shocking composure. She picked up a dropped tactical radio and listened to the chatter.
"...Alpha team, report! Did you secure Bellini? Alpha team!"
Sofia clicked the transmitter button once, twice, mimicking a broken connection, then dropped it onto the floor and crushed it beneath the heel of her shoe.
"They think their point team is still searching," she said, hurrying back to Marco. She took his heavy arm and slung it over her shoulder, supporting his weight without hesitation. "We need to get to the security bunker. Lorenzo will have rallied the reserve guards there."
Marco looked down at her face, smudged with dust and gun smoke, her dark eyes shining with an intelligence and bravery he had never witnessed in any woman—or man—in his entire syndicate.
"Why didn't you run, Sofia?" Marco asked, his voice thick with an emotion he could barely contain. "When the lights went out, you could have slipped out the kitchen delivery hatch. You could have saved yourself."
Sofia looked directly into his good eye, her expression completely bare. "My father always told me that a person shows who they truly are not when the sun is shining, but when the night is blackest. You gave me your hand on that staircase, Mr. Bellini. You treated a maid like an equal in front of seventy powerful people."
Her voice dropped to a fierce, tender whisper. "I don't leave people who stand up for me. Not ever."
Marco reached up with a blood-stained, calloused hand, gently cupping the side of her cheek. His thumb brushed away a streak of black soot from her cheekbone.
"Then I swear to you, Sofia Ramirez," Marco whispered, his voice vibrating with absolute, sacred resolve, "as long as I draw breath, no one will ever harm you or your family again. You are under my personal protection. Forever."
Before she could reply, the heavy steel reinforced door at the end of the laundry tunnel hissed open.
Lorenzo Vance stepped through, flanked by four heavily armed Bellini enforcers, their rifles raised. When Lorenzo saw Marco alive and standing, with Sofia supporting him, a profound look of relief broke through his battle-hardened face.
"Boss!" Lorenzo called out, lowering his weapon and rushing forward. "The exterior perimeter is secured. We took down eight of Moretti’s hitmen in the courtyard. The rest are in full retreat."
Marco did not take his hand away from Sofia’s cheek until Lorenzo reached them. He slowly dropped his hand, turning toward his security chief.
"And Vivian?" Marco asked coldly.
"She’s in the vault, locked down," Lorenzo replied. "She tried to bribe one of the guards to open the side gate during the firefight. She gave up everything, Marco. The entire plan."
"Tell me," Marco ordered.

Lorenzo took a deep breath, glancing briefly at Sofia before meeting his don’s gaze. "The ambush that blinded you in Queens a month ago? It wasn't just Moretti. Vivian Russo supplied the GPS coordinates of your motorcade. She and Dominic orchestrated the whole thing from the very beginning."
