Chapter 6 - The Brooklyn Hunt

The armored convoy tore through the predawn fog along the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway like a streak of black thunder. Rain lashed against the reinforced glass of the lead Cadillac Escalade, where Marco Bellini sat with one arm wrapped securely around Sofia’s trembling shoulders. His grip was an iron anchor, holding her together while the world outside threatened to rip apart at the seams.

"Ten minutes out, Boss," Lorenzo shouted from the front passenger seat, slamming a fresh magazine into his tactical sidearm. "Our precinct contacts confirm heavy gunfire reported around St. Jude’s dormitory quad. Father Thomas triggered the silent alarm eight minutes ago."

"Leo..." Sofia choked out, her fingernails biting deep into the leather of Marco’s tailored knee. Her face was ashen, her chest heaving against the silk of her borrowed gown. "Marco, he’s only nine years old. He has severe asthma. If they scare him, if he can't reach his inhaler—"

"He is breathing, Sofia. Look at me," Marco commanded, his voice cutting through her spiraling terror with sheer, unyielding authority. He took her chin in his gloved fingers, turning her face toward his. In the amber glow of the vehicle’s tactical dash, his right eye burned with an icy, ferocious brilliance, while his scarred left eye tracked her with terrifying clarity. "Nobody touches your blood while my heart beats. Not Moretti, not God himself. I promised you a future, and that promise begins with bringing your brother home alive."

Sofia searched the ruthless planes of his face, finding not the cold syndicate monster that New York feared, but a man who had staked his entire empire on her trust. She nodded, drawing a ragged, trembling breath. "I believe you."

"Lorenzo," Marco’s voice dropped into a register that made the driver’s spine stiffen. "No prisoners among the squad that touched that school. If Moretti wants a war of extermination, give him a funeral pyre."

"Understood, Boss."

The heavy gates of St. Jude’s Academy loomed ahead, knocked off their hinges and resting crookedly against the stone pillars. Black smoke curled into the graying morning sky from a security guardhouse that had been sprayed with automatic fire. The moment the Escalade skidded onto the courtyard gravel, Marco kicked his door open.

"Stay behind the perimeter line, Sofia!" Lorenzo yelled, but Marco was already on his feet, drawing a matte-black customized Kimber .45 from beneath his armpit. He pulled Sofia tightly behind him, shielding her body with his broad, armored chest as two Bellini strike teams flooded out of the trailing SUVs, weapons raised, sweeping the cloistered arches of the ancient brick school.

A sharp crack echoed across the quad. A bullet pinged off the Escalade's armored frame inches from Marco’s shoulder. Marco didn't flinch. His vision, though still sensitive to sudden flashes, aligned instantly along the sight of his pistol. He raised his arm and fired two rhythmic, devastating rounds into the second-floor dormitory window. A muffled cry followed, and a body crashed through the glass, crumpling onto the slate roof before sliding into the courtyard bushes.

"Ground floor clear!" an enforcer barked through the tactical headset. "Basement chapel door has been breached from the inside!"

"The chapel," Sofia gasped, recognizing the layout. "The choir students hide in the crypt when the city has storm drills! Leo knows that tunnel!"

"Move!" Marco roared, gripping Sofia’s hand as they breached the heavy oak doors of the academy.

Inside, the scent of spent gunpowder mingled with burning tallow candles. Marble statues of saints stood weeping in the gloom, their plaster faces chipped by stray bullets. At the altar of the lower chapel, Father Thomas lay wounded against the communion rail, clutching a bleeding shoulder. Standing over a low wooden trapdoor was Moretti’s lead enforcer—a hulking mercenary known in the Red Hook docks as Bruno—hauling a terrified, sobbing boy by the collar of his navy school uniform.

"Don't move, Bellini!" Bruno screamed, pressing the barrel of a sawed-off shotgun against Leo’s temple. "One twitch and the kid’s brains decorate the altar! Back the hell up!"

"Leo!" Sofia screamed, lunging forward, but Marco’s arm locked around her waist like a steel band, physically restraining her while stepping directly into Bruno’s line of fire.

"Sofia!" the little boy sobbed, his pale face streaked with tears and asthma-induced sweat, his chest hitching painfully. "Sofia, help me!"

Marco stepped forward, completely ignoring the shotgun pointed straight at him. His posture was leisurely, almost contemptuous, radiating a lethal stillness that froze the mercenary in place.

"You know who I am, Bruno," Marco said softly, his voice echoing off the vaulted chapel ceiling. "You know that Moretti pays in cash, but I pay in eternity."

"Back off, Marco! I'll pull it!" Bruno’s finger trembled on the trigger.

"You won't," Marco whispered, tilting his head. "Because the moment you pull that trigger, you guarantee forty-eight hours of agonizing death in my vaults. But if you take your hand off that boy's neck right now, I will let you die instantly with a single bullet. That is the highest mercy you will ever be offered on this earth."

Bruno’s eyes darted frantically between Marco’s unwavering gaze and the laser sight now painting his forehead from Lorenzo’s rifle in the choir loft. Terror fractured the mercenary's nerve. His hand wavered for a split second.

That split second was all Marco needed.

Marco moved with explosive, predatory speed. He closed the ten-foot distance before Bruno could pull the trigger, his left hand clamping down over the shotgun’s cylinder to jam the hammer, while his right forearm drove upward into Bruno’s jaw with bone-crushing force. Bruno gagged on blood, the shotgun clattering to the flagstones.

Marco wrenched the boy away with one arm, spinning him backward into Sofia’s waiting embrace, and in the same continuous motion drew his combat blade from his tactical boot. A single, surgical slash across Bruno’s throat ended the threat forever.

The mercenary slumped dead against the communion rail.

Sofia collapsed onto the floor, clutching Leo against her heart in a desperate, weeping embrace. "Leo! Oh God, Leo, I'm here, you're safe, I've got you!"

Leo buried his face in Sofia’s neck, his small body shivering violently as he inhaled ragged gulps of air. "Sofia... they said you were dead... they said the mafia took you..."

Marco wiped the dark blade clean on Bruno’s jacket, sheathed it, and slowly knelt beside them on the blood-spattered stone. The terrifying don of the Five Boroughs vanished, replaced by a man who looked upon the woman who had saved him with raw, reverent tenderness. He reached into his pocket, pulled out the child’s silver asthma inhaler which Lorenzo had recovered from the dorm room, and gently placed it into Leo’s shaking fingers.

"Nobody takes your sister, little lion," Marco said softly, his deep voice carrying a warmth neither Lorenzo nor his capos had ever heard before. "And nobody will ever lay a finger on you again. I give you my word."

Leo looked up through tear-filled eyes, his gaze shifting from Marco’s scarred, handsome face to his sister. Sofia looked at Marco, tears streaming freely down her cheeks, her heart swelling with an emotion so fierce and terrifying that it eclipsed the violence of the morning. She reached out, her small, trembling hand covering Marco’s bloodstained knuckles.

Marco did not pull away. Instead, his fingers curled around hers, sealing an unspoken bond amidst the ruins of the sanctuary.
