Chapter 15 - The Montgomery Legacy
The grand ballroom erupted into complete pandemonium.
Camera flashes from society reporters exploded across the room as the federal marshals secured Evelyn’s hands behind her emerald velvet gown. Evelyn shrieked, thrashing against their grip, her face contorted in pure, venomous rage.
"Clara! You ungrateful little bitch!" Evelyn screamed, her voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings as guests scrambled out of her way in disgust. "I gave you life! Everything Charles Montgomery had belonged to me! You stole my life! You stole my money!"
"You stole from a child, Evelyn," Evan retorted fiercely, stepping between her and me. "And now you’re going to pay every cent back from inside a prison cell."
Bradley Dupont pulled his arm roughly away from Carolyn’s desperate clutches. "Don't touch me, Carolyn."
"Bradley, please!" Carolyn sobbed, mascara streaming down her cheeks, ruining her pristine bridal makeup. "It wasn't me! It was my mother! I didn't know!"
"You filed a false child abuse report against your own sister to steal trust funds, Carolyn," Bradley said, his expression filled with cold revulsion. "The wedding is canceled. The engagement is off. My family wants nothing to do with you."
Eleanor Dupont turned her back on Carolyn, signaling the catering staff to shut down the open bar, while guests began flooding toward the exits in stunned silence.
As Evelyn was marched out of the ballroom in handcuffs, Carolyn collapsed onto the carpet in a heap of crumpled silk and tears, completely abandoned.
I looked down at them one last time, feeling no pity, no remorse—only an overwhelming sense of profound peace. Evan wrapped his arm around my shoulder, and together with Julian Vance, we walked out into the cool, starlit evening.
Three days later, the chaotic noise of the city was replaced by the serene rustle of pine trees and fresh mountain air.
Evan, Lucy, and I arrived at the Montgomery ancestral estate in the rolling hills of the Hudson Valley—a majestic stone manor surrounded by hundreds of acres of protected woodland, gardens, and horse pastures that Charles Montgomery had preserved for generations.
Lucy ran freely across the manicured lawns, her laughter bright and unburdened, while our golden retriever chased falling leaves behind her. For the first time in her young life, she was safe.
Julian Vance met us on the grand stone terrace, carrying a small, polished mahogany box lined with velvet.
"This was entrusted to me by your grandfather Charles," Julian said softly, handing the box to Lucy. "He instructed me to give it to his great-granddaughter only when she was safe in her rightful home."
Lucy opened the box with wide, wonder-filled eyes. Inside lay a delicate gold locket with an intricately carved oak tree on the front. Inside the locket was a tiny, faded photograph of me as a baby being held by a kind-eyed, silver-haired man I had never known—my grandfather Charles. Opposite the photo was an inscription in delicate script: *To Lucy: The light that broke the darkness.*
Lucy looked up, tears of pure joy shining in her eyes. "Mommy, he knew me. The great-grandpa knew I was coming."
"He did, my love," I whispered, holding her tight against my chest while Evan wrapped his arms around both of us. "He was watching over us all along."
Julian smiled warmly at the sight, but as he stepped back toward his car, his expression shifted subtly into one of intense concern. He signaled for Evan and me to walk over to the edge of the terrace.
"Julian? What is it?" I asked, noticing the tension returning to his shoulders.
Julian lowered his voice, glancing toward the distant tree line bordering the estate. "The district attorney’s office finished inventorying Evelyn's personal bank safe an hour ago. The 3.8 million in embezzled dividends... it isn’t in any of her accounts."
Evan frowned. "What do you mean? Where is it?"
"Evelyn didn't spend all of it on Carolyn's lifestyle," Julian said, his eyes darkening with grave warning. "Six months ago, Evelyn transferred two million dollars into a blind offshore account belonging to an alias. We just traced the IP address used to access that account yesterday."

My breath hitched. "Who accessed it?"
"A man named Marcus Vance," Julian said quietly. "Your estranged older brother, Clara. The one Evelyn told everyone died in a motorcycle accident ten years ago. He is very much alive, he just landed at Boston Logan Airport, and he believes you stole his birthright."
