Chapter 13 - The Frozen Accounts

Carolyn’s jaw hung open, her face draining of color until she looked like a ghost standing on the pavement.

"You can't do this!" Carolyn shrieked, her voice cracking in hysterical humiliation as our neighbors peeked through their curtains and came out onto their porches. "This is our family! Clara stole everything from us! Officer, arrest them! Arrest Julian Vance!"

The senior police officer took one look at Judge Morrison's official seal on the Supreme Court order, turned around, and put his hand on his handcuffs.

"Ma'am," the officer told Carolyn sternly, "you are in violation of a standing supreme court protective injunction. Get in your vehicle and leave this property immediately, or you will be transported to county lockup in the back of my cruiser."

Carolyn looked desperately between the officers, the CPS investigator who was now backing away with an apologetic expression, and Julian Vance, who stood like a stone wall.

Bursting into humiliated tears, Carolyn stumbled back into her car, slammed the door, and sped away so fast her tires smoked against the asphalt.

"Thank you, Julian," Evan breathed, letting out a breath he seemed to have held for an eternity.

"We are just getting started, Evan," Julian replied with grim satisfaction. "Now, Clara, come inside. It is time to execute the financial strike."

We sat around our kitchen table with laptops open while Lucy quietly finished her drawing in the adjoining sunroom. Julian’s forensic team had spent the last six hours cross-referencing my father’s old ledgers with the Montgomery Trust bank records.

"Your mother Evelyn didn't just spend your father’s life insurance and your childhood savings, Clara," Julian said, pointing to a cascade of financial transactions on his screen. "Twenty-two years ago, Evelyn illegally forged your deceased grandfather’s signature to divert monthly distribution dividends from an auxiliary Montgomery holding account into a private trust under her name. Over two decades, she siphoned nearly 3.8 million dollars."

My eyes widened. "That’s how she bought the waterfront estate. That’s how she paid for Carolyn’s elite private academies and European vacations while telling me we were too poor to afford my college tuition!"

"Exactly," Julian said. "Charles Montgomery discovered the diversion shortly before he died, but he did not report it to the authorities. Instead, he placed an ironclad clawback clause into his will. The moment you assumed executive control of the lineage trust, all accounts linked to that stolen dividend were subject to immediate, non-judicial asset freeze."

Julian pressed a button on his keyboard.

"At five o’clock sharp today—two minutes ago—the freeze went live across eight regional banking institutions," Julian smiled thinly. "Evelyn’s primary accounts, her credit cards, her investment portfolios, and Carolyn’s trust stipends have all been locked down pending federal audit."

Right on cue, my phone on the table began to ring. The caller ID flashed: *CAROLYN*.

I looked at Julian, who nodded gently. I tapped speakerphone.

"CLARA!" Carolyn screamed, her voice completely unhinged, accompanied by the loud background noise of a high-end commercial boutique. "What did you do?! What did you do to my cards?!"

"Hello, Carolyn," I said, keeping my voice utterly level.

"I’m at my bridal salon trying to pay the fifty-thousand-dollar deposit for my custom Vera Wang gown, and every single one of my credit cards just declined!" Carolyn sobbed in blind fury. "Mom’s cards declined too! The bank manager told me all our accounts are under a federal freeze ordered by the Montgomery estate! Call your attorney and fix this right now! Bradley’s mother is standing right next to me! Do you know how humiliated I am?!"

"I imagine you feel about as humiliated as Lucy felt when you locked her in a pitch-black pantry on Christmas Eve while you ate prime rib," I answered, my tone chillingly cold.

"That was just discipline! She’s six years old, she doesn’t even remember it!" Carolyn shrieked. "Bradley’s family will cancel the wedding if they find out Mom and I are bankrupt! Clara, please, I am your sister!"

"You stopped being my sister the day you tried to steal my daughter for twelve million dollars," I said firmly. "Enjoy explaining to your future in-laws why every dime you ever spent was stolen from a dead man. Goodbye, Carolyn."

I hung up, ending the call before she could scream another word. The silence in the kitchen was absolute, and for the first time in my life, I felt the heavy chains of my childhood dissolve into dust.
