Chapter 14 - The Mother’s Reckoning

The following evening, the drama reached its boiling point at the grand ballroom of the St. Regis Hotel in downtown Boston.

Carolyn’s high-society bridal engagement gala—an extravagant, black-tie affair meant to cement Carolyn’s entrance into the wealthy Dupont family—was scheduled to begin at seven o’clock. Despite the account freezes, Evelyn had scrambled desperately, attempting to use post-dated checks and personal guarantees to keep the event from unraveling in front of Boston’s upper crust.

Evan and I arrived at seven-thirty, flanked by Julian Vance and two federal marshals carrying court-issued summonses.

I wore an elegant, midnight-blue silk gown, my hair pinned up, radiating a confidence I had never known I possessed. Evan looked striking in a tailored tuxedo, his arm linked firmly with mine. We walked past the velvet ropes without a glance at the stunned security guards, who froze when Julian flashed his official identification and court dockets.

Inside, crystal chandeliers cast a glittering light over two hundred guests in tuxedos and evening gowns. Carolyn stood on a raised dais near an enormous five-tiered floral arrangement, wearing a dazzling ivory cocktail dress, holding a glass of champagne while whispering frantically to her fiancé, Bradley Dupont.

A few feet away stood Evelyn, decked out in diamond necklaces and an emerald velvet gown, sweating under her heavy makeup as she tried to smooth over questions from Bradley’s aristocratic mother, Eleanor Dupont.

"I assure you, Eleanor," Evelyn was saying with a forced, shrill laugh, "it was merely a minor banking clerical error. The Montgomery family accounts are boundless—"

"The Montgomery family accounts do not belong to you, Evelyn," I said clearly, my voice carrying effortlessly across the opulent ballroom.

The room fell dead silent. Whispers rippled through the crowd like dominoes tumbling.

Carolyn gasped, nearly dropping her champagne flute. "What are you doing here?! Security! Get her out!"

Security stepped forward, but the two federal marshals stepped in front of Evan and me, flashing their gold badges. The guards stopped dead in their tracks.

Evelyn turned scarlet, her hands trembling so violently that the ice in her cocktail glass clinked against the crystal. "Clara! How dare you disrupt your sister’s rehearsal dinner! Have you no shame?!"

"Shame?" I walked slowly up the marble steps toward the dais, looking directly into my mother’s terrified eyes. "You spent thirty-four years telling me I was ungrateful, worthless, and born to serve this family. You stole my college fund, you bled my father’s life insurance dry, and on Christmas Eve, you locked my six-year-old child in a dark room without food because she drew a picture of our family without you in it."

Gasps erupted across the room. Eleanor Dupont’s eyes narrowed into sharp daggers as she stared at Evelyn. "What did she just say?"

"She's lying! She's mentally unstable!" Carolyn cried out, grasping Bradley’s sleeve. "Bradley, don't listen to her! She's jealous of me!"

Julian Vance stepped forward, opening a leather binder for everyone near the dais to see.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Julian’s voice resonated with ironclad authority. "I am Julian Vance, executor of the Charles Montgomery Lineage Trust. As of four o'clock today, an emergency grand jury convened by the State Attorney General has handed down criminal indictments against Evelyn Vance and Carolyn Vance for twenty-two counts of grand larceny, wire fraud, and criminal falsification of legal documents."

The federal marshals stepped up to Evelyn.

"Evelyn Vance," the lead marshal stated coldly. "You are under arrest."
