Chapter 8 - The Art of the Ambush

The news hit my desk less than an hour later: Olivia Vance had posted a three-million-dollar cash bond through a third-party bail bondsman backed by a shadowy private equity syndicate known as Apex Meridian.

"Who owns Apex Meridian?" I asked, pacing the length of the conference room.

Julian was leaning over the interactive digital display table, mapping the ownership structure through offshore shell corporations in Delaware and Luxembourg.

"It’s a consortium of disgruntled former Carter Global board members," Julian said, zooming in on a primary signature on the incorporation filings. "Led by your second cousin, Victor Carter."

I stopped in my tracks. A sharp intake of breath caught in my throat. "Uncle Victor?"

"Victor has never forgiven your father for naming you and Michael as the sole heirs to the family voting trust," Michael said, his voice bitter with disgust. "He’s been hovering on the fringes of the board for five years, trying to gather enough dissident shareholders to force a liquidity event."

"Victor didn't just bail Olivia out," Julian explained, pulling up a series of encrypted communication logs intercepted by his cybersecurity team. "He financed her return to the United States three months ago. He realized that Olivia had leverage over Ryan, and Ryan had marriage access to you. If Ryan and Olivia had managed to drag you into a protracted, messy public scandal, Victor was planning to launch a hostile proxy fight at the upcoming annual Carter Foundation Gala to remove Michael and you as co-trustees."

"They wanted to use my pain as corporate leverage," I whispered, the cold anger inside me solidifying into an unbreakable shield of diamond.

"They underestimated two things," Julian said, looking directly into my eyes with an intensity that made the air between us grow heavy and electric. "They underestimated how quickly you would strike back. And they forgot that Sterling Capital owns fifteen percent of Carter Global’s preferred shares."

He walked over to where I was standing, closing the distance between us until only a whisper of space remained. Julian was not a man given to overt emotional displays; his power came from his terrifying restraint. But in that moment, the raw protective fire in his slate-gray eyes took my breath away.

"You've fought this battle with blood running into your eyes, Grace," Julian said, his voice dropping into a low, intimate baritone. "Now let me fight beside you where you don't have to carry the weight alone."

My heart pounded against my ribs. For three years with Ryan, I had felt like a beggar pleading for scraps of affection, constantly apologizing for taking up space, constantly walking on eggshells. But Julian looked at me as if I were the only sovereign worth bowing to.

"What's your plan, Julian?" I asked softly, my breath trembling slightly.

"Victor and Olivia think they still have the element of surprise," Julian said, a cold, dangerous grin playing at the corner of his lips. "The annual Carter Foundation Gala is tomorrow night at the Metropolitan Club. Victor has already submitted an emergency motion to add a proxy vote to the evening's agenda, claiming your divorce creates an unacceptable reputational risk for the foundation."

"And Olivia?"

"Victor has arranged an invitation for her under an alias," Julian said. "They intend to stage a public spectacle. They want Olivia to appear as the tragic victim of Carter corporate bullying—an innocent girl attacked by the Carter legal machine. They want the press to see you as a vindictive heiress using institutional power to crush an adopted sister."

"They want theater," I said, a slow, predatory smile touching my own lips.

"So we give them an opera," Julian replied. "A complete, five-act tragedy where the curtain falls on their heads."
