Chapter 20 - Shadows from the Deep
"Move! Now!" Julian roared, grabbing me by the waist as the lights inside the salon flickered and died, plunging us into crimson emergency lighting.
Water was already spilling over the salon threshold, cold and foaming around our ankles. Julian didn't let go of me for a single second. He carried me through the listing doorway out onto the tilted aft deck, where Marcus and our team were frantically transferring Eleanor and Olivia across the gangway to the *Vanguard*.
Olivia was screaming like a banshee, clawing at the security guards as the surging sea threatened to drag the sinking vessel beneath the waves. Eleanor was silent, her eyes locked onto me through the storm of spray, wearing a sickening, prophetic smile.
"The truth is in the deep, Grace!" Eleanor shouted through the howling wind. "You opened Pandora’s box! Neither of you will leave these waters alive!"
"Get them across!" Julian ordered. With iron-clad focus, he shielded my body with his own as we crossed the swaying gangway between the two vessels. The moment my boots slammed onto the reinforced deck of the *Vanguard*, Julian bellowed: "Cut the boarding lines! Reverse thrust!"
The heavy steel cables snapped, whining through the air, and the *Vanguard* surged backward into the darkness just as *The Siren’s Call* groaned in metal fatigue, her stern lifting into the air before plunging down into the Mediterranean depths, swallowed whole by the black tide.
I stood on the deck, trembling, soaked in sea spray, clutching my father's journal and the letter tightly against my chest.
Julian came to stand directly in front of me. He pulled off his wet gloves, his large hands cupping my face, lifting my chin so our eyes met. He didn't care about the sinking ship, the cold wind, or the fifty-billion-euro fortune. His entire world was narrowed down to me.
"Are you hurt?" he asked, his voice raw, thick with an emotion he could no longer conceal. "Grace, look at me. Are you safe?"
"I'm safe," I breathed, leaning into his warmth. "Julian... you saved me. Again."
Julian pulled me against his chest, wrapping his arms around me like an impenetrable fortress. I buried my head into his neck, hearing the wild, fierce beat of his heart. For the first time since that bloody night in Manhattan—since Ethan and Olivia broke my world—I felt truly whole. We had defeated the traitors. We had reclaimed Carter Global. And in Julian’s arms, I had found a love that was dangerous, unyielding, and pure.
"We won, Julian," I murmured against his collar. "We took everything back."
"Not yet," Julian whispered gently, kissing the top of my head, right where the scar lay beneath my hair. "I will not rest until every shadow from your past is burned to ashes. We will uncover what your father wrote. Together."
Suddenly, the bridge alarm shrieked—a piercing, high-frequency siren that cut through the night like a blade.
Marcus burst out onto the observation deck, his face ghost-white, holding an emergency radio receiver.
"Boss! Miss Grace! We have multiple sonar contacts surfacing right beneath us!"
Before Julian could react, the sea three hundred yards off our starboard bow erupted in boiling white foam. A massive, black, unmarked submarine broke the surface of the Mediterranean, its sleek, predatory hull gleaming beneath the pale moonlight. Then another surfaced to our port side, and a third behind our stern.
We were completely surrounded.
The tactical bridge speakers crackled to life, overriding our private frequency with a distorted, modulated voice that sent an icy shiver down my spine:
*"Julian Vance. Grace Carter. You have retrieved what belongs to the Sovereign Syndicate. You have thirty seconds to drop the ledger into the sea and stand down your engines... or we will send the Vanguard to join Eleanor’s yacht at the bottom of the trench."*
May you like
Julian stood in front of me, his eyes blazing with an intoxicating, lethal defiance, his hand reaching for the master defense switch.
"Grace," Julian whispered, his fingers curling tightly around mine. "Hold on."
