Chapter 18 - Boarding the Siren

The night erupted into chaos. The *Vanguard* cut through the waves like a predator, closing the final two hundred meters beneath total blackout conditions. Gunfire rattled across the water—sparks pinging off the reinforced hull of our boat—but Julian’s tactical team returned suppressive fire with lethal precision, targeting the searchlights of *The Siren’s Call*.

With a deafening crunch of fiberglass and steel, the *Vanguard* slammed alongside Eleanor’s yacht, magnetic boarding clamps engaging with hydraulic force.

"Move!" Julian shouted.

Flanked by armed security, Julian led the charge across the boarding bridge. I moved right behind him, my pulse thrumming with pure adrenaline. The aft deck was a warzone of shattered glass, smoking flares, and subdued mercenaries groaning on the deck.

Victor Vance, the rogue commander Eleanor had hired, raised his sidearm toward Julian, but Julian didn’t hesitate. In two blindingly fast movements, Julian closed the distance, swept Vance’s arm upward, and delivered a devastating elbow strike to the man’s throat, sending him crashing unconscious against the teak dining table.

The deck fell dead silent, save for the hum of the yacht’s idling engines and the splash of waves against the hull.

Julian turned to me, lowering his weapon, extending his hand. "The salon," he said quietly. "They’re inside."

I took his hand, feeling the iron strength in his fingers, and together we kicked through the double glass doors of the luxury salon.

Inside, the scene was pathetic.

Eleanor Carter was clutching an overturned mahogany chair, her designer silk blouse torn, her manicured fingers trembling as she stared at us with wide, horrified eyes. Gone was the immaculate Manhattan socialite; all that remained was an aging schemer stripped of her masks.

And in the center of the room, standing beside the bar, was Olivia.

She looked wild, her platinum hair disheveled, her eyes bloodshot with frantic rage. In her left hand, she gripped a small silver lighter. In her right hand, held over an open bucket of chemical solvent, was my father’s leather journal.

"Stop right there!" Olivia shrieked, her voice cracking as she held the lighter an inch from the frayed leather cover. "One more step, Julian, and I drop it! Fifty billion euros gone in a flash of sulfur! Your precious father will be erased forever, Grace!"

Julian stepped forward, but I raised my hand, stopping him.

"Julian," I said calmly. "Let me."

I walked forward across the ruined carpet, my eyes fixed entirely on Olivia. She flinched as I stepped closer, her bravado shattering under the weight of my cold, unblinking glare.

"Look at you, Olivia," I said softly, each word cutting deeper than a blade. "Look how low you’ve fallen. A few weeks ago, you stood over me in my own penthouse while I was bleeding on the floor. You smirked while my husband comforted you. You thought you had conquered my life."

"I am better than you!" Olivia screamed, tears of venom streaming down her face. "Ethan loved me! He despised you! He wanted me to have everything!"

"Ethan didn't love you," I replied, taking another step. "He used you as an accomplice because he was too cowardly to steal from my father alone. And right now, while you stand here ready to throw away your freedom, Ethan has already given the Swiss prosecutor your name, Eleanor’s name, and every bank account you’ve ever touched in exchange for a lighter sentence."

Olivia’s eyes widened in sheer panic. "He... he wouldn't."

"He did," I said, now standing just five feet away from her. "Because cowards always save themselves. You gave up everything for a man who traded you for thirty pieces of silver."

"Shut up!" Olivia yelled, raising the lighter. "I'll burn it! I swear to God I'll burn it!"

"Do it," I whispered.

Olivia froze.

"Burn it," I repeated, my voice deadly and steady. "Because even if you burn those pages, Olivia, you can’t burn what’s in my head. My father taught me the ciphers before he died. The coordinates mean nothing without the master key—and that key lives in my blood. So go ahead. Destroy the paper. It only seals your indictment for maritime grand larceny."

Olivia’s hand shook violently. The realization of her utter, total defeat washed over her face like ice water.
