Chapter 7 - The Reckoning of the Accomplices

Over the next forty-eight hours, the dominoes fell with brutal, unrelenting precision.

Armed with Melissa’s journals and financial ledgers, federal investigators raided the offices of *Vance Horizon LLC* and the pediatric clinic.

They arrested Dr. Arthur Sterling, the corrupt clinic pharmacist who had been siphoning hospital-grade Digoxin and Clonidine for Melissa in exchange for a cut of her embezzlement proceeds. They also arrested Walter Briggs, the crooked notary public who had illegally rubber-stamped Melissa’s fraudulent modifications to Ethan’s trust documents without my presence.

By Thursday afternoon, the state attorney general announced the seizure of all assets tied to Melissa Vance, freezing over one point two million dollars across various domestic and offshore accounts.

Grant Vance was discharged from the hospital on Friday morning.

He didn't go back to his house. He went straight to the police station to sign a formal deposition against his wife, waiving spousal privilege, before checking into an extended-stay motel three towns over.

Before he left town, Grant asked to see me one last time.

We met at a small coffee shop near the river, far away from the neighborhood where the nightmare had unfolded.

Grant looked twenty years older. His hands shook as he held a cup of chamomile tea. He wouldn't look me in the eye.

"I signed the divorce papers this morning," Grant said in a hollow voice. "And I gave the state everything. Every text message. Every email. Every transaction."

"Good," I said simply.

"Dan... I know I can never make this right," Grant whispered, his voice breaking. "I should have seen it. I should have paid attention to the money. If I had just paid attention... Rachel might still be here."

I looked across the table at him.

"You didn't poison that drink, Grant," I said, my voice measured and firm. "And you didn't put Digoxin in Rachel's coffee. But you looked the other way because it was easier than facing the truth about who you married. You let your pride blind you."

Grant nodded, weeping silently. "I know."

"Take your life, Grant. Go somewhere else. Start over. But don't ever contact Ethan again. He doesn't need any more ghosts from that family."

Grant wiped his eyes, nodded once, and stood up. "Goodbye, Daniel. Tell Ethan... tell him his uncle is sorry."

"I'll tell him what he needs to know," I replied.

I watched Grant walk out of the coffee shop, a solitary, broken figure disappearing into the autumn fog.

The poison had touched everyone. But the healing was finally beginning.
