Chapter 3 - The Awakening

The smell of antiseptic and ozone hung thick in the ICU room.
Grant lay propped up on the mechanical bed, his skin pale and waxy, blue veins showing clearly through the translucent skin of his temples. An oxygen cannula ran under his nose, hissing softly. The cardiac monitor beside him beeped in a slow, rhythmic cadence—sixty-two beats per minute.
When I stepped into the room, his eyelids fluttered open.
He saw me. His eyes went wide with sudden, terrifying recognition, and the monitor’s beep accelerated instantly: seventy, eighty-two, ninety.
"D-Dan..." he rasped, his voice shredded by the endotracheal tube that had been pulled from his throat just an hour before.
I walked to the side of the bed. I didn't smile. I didn't offer sympathy. I just stood over him, looking at the man who had sat on my couch while my sister-in-law prepared to destroy my life.
"Don't try to move, Grant," I said quietly.
Tears sprang to the corners of Grant's eyes, leaking down his hollow cheeks. "The... the drink..."
"You drank it," I said. "You drank the pink cup with the umbrella."
Grant swallowed hard, wincing in pain. "It was... burning. My chest... felt like ice. Dan, what happened to me? Melissa said... she said she made that for Ethan..."
"Why did she make it for Ethan, Grant?"
Grant closed his eyes tightly, his breathing shallow and rapid. "I didn't know... I swear to God, Dan, I didn't know she put anything in it! She told me... she told me Ethan was having night terrors. She said she had an herbal mixture from her holistic doctor. She told me she was going to slip it into his juice so he would finally sleep through the night."
"An herbal mixture?" I leaned in closer, my voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "It was Clonidine and propranolol, Grant. Enough to cause cardiogenic shock in an adult. In Ethan, it would have stopped his heart or put him into a coma. She poisoned you. By accident, because I switched the cups."
Grant let out a broken, shuddering sob that rattled the plastic IV lines taped to his arm. "Oh God... oh God, Melissa..."
"She had an anonymous report queued up to CPS before she even walked through my front door," I continued, relentless. "She wanted Ethan taken away by the state. She wanted me declared an unfit father. Why, Grant? Tell me why she hated us that much."
Grant looked at me, his eyes full of pathetic, wretched despair.
"She didn't hate you, Dan," Grant whispered, his chin trembling. "She envied you. She envied Rachel."
"What are you talking about?"
"Rachel was always the perfect one," Grant said, his voice cracking. "Rachel got the scholarship. Rachel got the tech job. Rachel married you—a man who actually built things, who loved her. Melissa... Melissa was drowning in debt. She started taking money from clients three years ago. When Rachel found out..."
My heart stopped.
"When Rachel found out what?" I demanded, grabbing the metal rail of the bed.
Grant stared at the ceiling, tears pouring into his ears. "Rachel found out about the embezzling at the pediatric clinic. Rachel threatened to report Melissa to the state licensing board two weeks before she died."
The air in the room vanished. The beeping of the heart monitor seemed to fade into a dull, underwater echo.
"Rachel... knew?"
"Rachel told Melissa she had thirty days to turn herself in and enter restitution, or Rachel would take the files to the prosecutor herself," Grant choked out. "Rachel said she loved her, but she wouldn't let Melissa steal from sick children."
"And then Rachel died," I whispered, the words freezing in my throat like shards of glass. "An unexplained sudden cardiac arrest. In our kitchen. While making coffee."
Grant turned his head away, weeping uncontrollably. "I don't know, Dan! I swear on my life I don't know what happened that morning! But after Rachel died, Melissa became obsessed. She said Rachel’s money belonged to our family. She said Rachel stole the spotlight her entire life, and now Ethan was going to pay the debt."
"Where are the files, Grant?" I asked, my voice deadly, terrifyingly calm. "The files Rachel had on her."
"Under the floorboards in our guest bedroom," Grant wept. "In a metal lockbox. The key is in the lining of my golf bag in the garage. Take it. Take everything, Dan. Just... don't let her near Ethan again. She’s not human anymore."
I looked down at the broken man in the hospital bed for three long seconds.

Then I turned on my heel and walked out of the ICU.
