Chapter 5 - The Safe Deposit Box

The afternoon sun blazed through the high windows of the First National Bank branch on 4th Street.

Detective Sarah Miller, two armed deputies, David, and I stood inside the bank’s private vault room. The bank manager, a trembling man named Henderson, slid the heavy brass safety deposit box across the mahogany table.

"Box 412," Henderson whispered, stepping back toward the door. "Registered solely to Melissa Vance."

Detective Miller put on blue latex gloves. She looked at me. "Ready, Daniel?"

I nodded.

Using the key Grant had directed us to find in his golf bag, Miller turned the tumblers. The lock clicked open with a heavy, metallic snap.

She lifted the brass lid.

Inside lay stacks of crisp hundred-dollar bills bound with white bank bands—at least eighty thousand dollars in cash. But beneath the money lay the real treasure: a leather-bound spiral notebook, three flash drives, and an amber prescription pill bottle with a torn label.

Miller lifted the pill bottle with tweezers.

The label was partially scratched off, but the letters were still legible: *DIGOXIN - 0.25 MG.*

Digoxin. A powerful cardiac glycoside used to treat heart failure and arrhythmias. Highly toxic in unmonitored doses, capable of triggering fatal ventricular fibrillation while mimicking natural cardiac arrest.

My knees nearly gave out. Tyler caught my arm, steadying me against the table.

"Rachel didn't take heart medication," I whispered, the room spinning around me. "She was thirty-two. She ran half-marathons. Her heart was perfect."

"Look at the notebook," David urged quietly.

Detective Miller flipped open the spiral journal. The handwriting was unmistakable—Melissa’s tight, slanted script.

The entries began fourteen months ago.

*March 4: Rachel found the ledger. She’s threatening the board. She doesn't understand that I did this for our family. She thinks her high-and-mighty moral code gives her the right to destroy me. I won't let her.*

*March 12: A little in the ground coffee each morning. Odorless. Tasteless. The cumulative effect takes two weeks. It looks like natural arrhythmia. Stress-induced.*

*March 28: It happened. Daniel was upstairs with Ethan. Perfect timing. He is broken. He can barely stand. He will sign whatever I put in front of him.*

*June 15: Daniel is rebuilding the house. He’s starting to ask questions about Rachel’s old accounts. He found the missing forty grand. He’s waking up. I have to speed up the transfer. If Ethan gets sick under his watch, the state will step in. Daniel won't survive losing Ethan too. He’ll sign the trust over to me just to stop fighting.*

I couldn't breathe.

The air in the vault turned to ice. Every memory of that terrible February morning flashed before my eyes in violent, agonizing detail. Rachel falling near the coffee machine. The coffee pot still brewing. Melissa arriving at the hospital within twenty minutes, holding me, weeping into my shoulder, whispering: *“I’ll take care of you, Danny. Rachel would want me to take care of Ethan.”*

She had killed the love of my life.

She had stood in our kitchen, watched Rachel slip away into cardiac arrest, and then held my hand at her funeral while Ethan cried into Rachel’s casket.

A sound tore from my throat—a roar of grief and pure, unadulterated fury that shook the concrete walls of the vault. I slammed my fist into the mahogany table, splitting the polished wood.

"Daniel, stop!" Tyler grabbed me, pulling me back with all his strength. "Dan, look at me! Look at me!"

"She killed her!" I screamed, tears blinding me. "She poisoned Rachel in our own kitchen! And she made me watch!"

"And now she's going to pay for it," Detective Miller said, her voice hard as steel, her eyes blazing with righteous fury. She snapped the notebook shut and bagged the amber bottle. "This isn't an attempted assault case anymore, Mr. Carter. This is First-Degree Premeditated Murder, Capital Murder, and Financial Exploitation of a Minor."

Miller pulled her radio from her belt and keyed the mic. "Dispatch, this is Unit 404. Notify the District Attorney immediately. Upgrade the charges on Melissa Vance. Execute an immediate hold without bail. We have the confession and the murder weapon."
