Chapter 5 - The Shadow of the Drake

Adrian didn't flinch. He set his linen napkin down on the table with calculated calm. "Mercer? Alone?"

"No," Viktor replied, his jaw tight. "He had three associates from the Castiglione syndicate with him. They rammed the iron gate with an armored Ford F-250. Mercer was screaming that you ruined his life, that he was going to burn the estate to the ground."

Julian Thorne sneered from across the table. "You fired a restaurant manager and managed to hand our rivals a guided missile straight to our front door? How sloppy, Adrian."

Adrian stood up. The temperature in the room plummeted once more. He didn't even look at Julian as he spoke. "Grandmother, go to the safe room on the third floor with Martha. Now."

Evelyn didn't argue. Her aristocratic calm never broke. She nodded once, stood with surprising agility, and patted my shoulder. "Stay behind my grandson, child. He is many things, but he is an impenetrable wall."

"Viktor," Adrian commanded as Evelyn exited through a hidden service door behind the sideboard. "Where are they now?"

"Security intercepted them at the lower fountain. Two of the Castiglione shooters are neutralized. One fled on foot. But Mercer... Mercer broke through the glass conservatory doors on the east terrace. He's armed, boss. And he's hysterical."

"Get Miss Carter to the vault," Adrian ordered, pulling the ceramic pistol back from his holster.

"No," I gasped, stepping out from behind the heavy oak chair. "Wait! Daniel... Daniel isn't a killer, Adrian. He's a coward! He’s terrified, he’s acting out of panic because you destroyed his life in five seconds!"

Adrian turned on me, his gray eyes burning with cold fire. "He brought armed cartel enforcers to my home, Sophie. The moment he crossed that perimeter with weapons, his life was forfeit."

"If you slaughter him, you prove him right!" I pleaded, my heart hammering violently against my chest. "He thinks you're just a monster who crushes people beneath his boot!"

"I *am* a monster to anyone who threatens what is mine," Adrian growled, his voice vibrating with lethal certainty.

Before I could reply, the sound of splintering mahogany shattered the quiet of the adjoining library.

Daniel Mercer stumbled through the double doors, drenched in rain and blood, his clothes torn to shreds. His eyes were wide, manic, completely unhinged by terror and adrenaline. In his right hand, he clutched a heavy silver revolver, his finger twitching uncontrollably against the trigger.

"VOSS!" Daniel screamed, his voice cracking into a ragged sob. "You think you can take everything from me? My job, my reputation, my future—over a goddamn twelve-dollar sandwich?!"

In a heartbeat, Adrian stepped directly in front of me, his massive frame shielding my entire body from the line of fire.

"Lower the weapon, Daniel," Adrian said, his voice flat, steady, and terrifyingly calm. "You have five seconds before my men put three rounds through your skull."

"I have nothing left!" Daniel wailed, tears carving clean lines through the grime on his face. He swung the barrel wildly, pointing it first at Adrian, then shifting the sight directly toward me. "And you, you self-righteous bitch! You started this! If you had just let that old woman walk out of the restaurant, none of this would have happened!"

"Daniel, listen to me!" I shouted from behind Adrian's shoulder, desperate to stop the slaughter I knew was coming. "Put the gun down! Adrian won't kill you if you drop the weapon right now!"

"Shut up! Shut up!" Daniel's finger clamped down on the trigger.

The world seemed to slow into fractured, agonizing frames.

Adrian didn't wait. He closed the distance between them with impossible, blinding speed. The gun went off—the deafening roar of the gunshot echoing like thunder inside the enclosed room. The bullet shattered a centuries-old oil painting on the wall behind me, showering marble dust and canvas fragments over my hair.

Before Daniel could cock the hammer again, Adrian's left hand struck like an iron vice around Daniel's wrist, twisting the joint with a sickening *crack*. Daniel shrieked in agony as the revolver dropped to the floor. Adrian’s right forearm smashed into Daniel's throat, lifting the grown man off his feet and slamming him violently against the heavy oak sideboard.

Plates clattered. Crystal glasses shattered on the floor.

Adrian held Daniel pinned by the throat with one hand, his fingers sinking deep into the man’s windpipe. Daniel kicked wildly, his face turning dark purple, his hands clawing uselessly at Adrian's granite-like forearm.

"Adrian, STOP!" I screamed, running forward and grabbing his arm with both hands. "Stop! You'll kill him!"

Adrian's eyes were completely black, consumed by raw, primal violence. He didn't look human; he looked like death itself, ready to snap Daniel’s neck like a dry twig.

"Adrian, please!" I begged, my tears finally spilling over as I pulled at his arm. "Look at me! Don't do this! Not for me, not like this!"

At the sound of my voice, something shifted in the depths of Adrian's icy gaze. The absolute void in his eyes fractured. He glanced down at my hands clutching his sleeve, then slowly looked back at Daniel's gasping, suffocating face.

With a cold, dismissive shove, Adrian hurled Daniel to the marble floor.

Daniel collapsed into a heap of shattered crystal, coughing violently, dragging ragged gasps of air into his bruised lungs. Two seconds later, Viktor and three armed guards flooded the room, their rifles raised, immediately pinning Daniel to the floor with heavy combat boots.

"Take him to the harbor facility," Adrian commanded, his breathing barely elevated despite the violence. "Hold him in a sub-level cell until I decide what to do with him. Secure the perimeter. Call the cleaning crew."

"Yes, boss," Viktor grunted, hauling the weeping, broken manager up by his collar and dragging him out into the rain.

The room fell dead silent again, save for the patter of heavy rain against the broken terrace windows and the frantic sound of my own ragged breathing. Julian and Bianca had vanished, having slipped away into the safe corridors the moment the first shot was fired.

Adrian stood amid the shards of broken glass, his dress shirt speckled with drops of blood that weren't his own. He lowered his head, rolling his shoulders, before turning slowly to face me.

"Are you hurt?" he asked. His voice was rough, strained with an emotion I couldn't quite identify.

"No," I whispered, trembling from head to toe. "No, I'm... I'm okay."

Adrian stepped forward, his eyes searching my face, inspecting every inch of me for injury. He reached out with a trembling hand—a hand that had nearly extinguished a man's life seconds ago—and gently brushed a fragment of shattered plaster from my cheek. His thumb lingered against my skin, surprisingly warm, impossibly tender.

"You shouldn't have stepped out from behind me," he murmured, his dark eyes burning into mine with terrifying intensity. "If that bullet had touched you, Sophie, there wouldn't be enough of this city left to bury."

My breath hitched. The proximity between us was overwhelming, charged with danger, power, and an undeniable, magnetic pull that terrified me more than Daniel's gun ever could.

Before I could find the words to respond, Adrian’s private encrypted phone buzzed violently on the dining table.

Adrian pulled his hand back, leaving my skin feeling cold where his touch had been. He picked up the device, tapped the screen, and placed it against his ear.

"Speak," he said coldly.

The voice on the other end was frantic, high-pitched, and trembling with panic. Even from two feet away, I could hear the words spilling through the receiver:

*"Mr. Voss! It's Dr. Chen from St. Jude’s Memorial! We have an emergency—a convoy of black tactical SUVs just breached the hospital's private garage! They cut the power to the VIP wing! Clara Carter... they're taking your mother, Miss Carter!"*

Adrian’s face locked into a mask of pure, absolute slaughter.

He lowered the phone, his gaze locking onto mine as my entire world collapsed into darkness.

"Viktor," Adrian roared, his voice shaking the foundations of the mansion. "Bring the war room online. We hunt tonight."
