Chapter 20 - Dawn of the Leviathan
The breath left my lungs in an icy rush.
"No," I whispered, taking a step backward, my fingers loosening their grip on the dagger. "That’s impossible. My father died when I was twelve. I went to his funeral. I saw the casket lowered into the earth!"
"He didn't die, Sophie," Julian gasped, his laugh turning into a strangled choke as Marcus hauled him upright by his collar, cuffing his hands in heavy zip-ties. "He liquidated your family's assets, faked his death, and bought a private island in the Mediterranean! He sold your mother out to my father to cover his gambling debts with the Syndicate! He was the one who signed the authorization to seal the vault!"
Adrian moved to my side in an instant, his arm circling my waist, holding me upright as the world tilted violently beneath my feet. His silver eyes were burning with a terrifying mixture of rage and shock.
"Briggs!" Adrian barked into his earpiece. "Trace that digital signature! Right now! I want IP origin, server relays, and satellite pings!"
A second of agonizing silence stretched through the comm line. When Briggs’s voice came back, it was trembling.
*"Boss... the signature didn't come from an archive. It was authenticated six minutes ago."*
My stomach dropped into a bottomless pit. "What did you say?"
*"The authorization to release the ledgers was countersigned from an active IP address inside Chicago,"* Briggs stammered, keystrokes rattling through the feed. *"It’s coming from... Miss Drake, it’s coming from the top-floor penthouse of the Drake Tower on Lake Shore Drive. The lights just turned on in the penthouse for the first time in twenty years."*
Suddenly, the high-pitched shriek of building-wide emergency sirens wailed through the Cultural Center.
The massive Tiffany glass dome overhead began to shudder. A low, mechanical vibration resonated through the iron girders of the ceiling.
"Adrian!" Marcus shouted, drawing his weapon as he looked upward. "We’ve got multiple fast-movers descending on the roof! Black unmarked choppers—not CPD, not FBI!"
*Crash!*
The four central panels of the hundred-year-old Tiffany glass shattered inward, raining thousands of multicolored, razor-sharp shards down upon the grand ballroom like a storm of jewels.
Heavy tactical ropes dropped through the opening.
Figures clad in sleek, charcoal-gray high-tech combat suits began repelling down into the ballroom—not wearing the badges of the city, but marked with an emblem that chilled my blood to absolute zero: a silver dragon coiled around a broken crown.
The true crest of the Drake Syndicate’s inner circle.
A voice, heavily amplified through the tactical comms installed in the building's PA system, echoed through the shattered dome. It was a voice from my earliest childhood memories—deep, aristocratic, smooth as aged bourbon, and chillingly devoid of human warmth.
*"Sophie, my darling child,"* the voice purred, echoing off the marble pillars as smoke grenades detonated around the perimeter of the room, filling the hall with thick, blinding white fog. *"You truly have your grandfather’s fire. You dismantled that pathetic Sterling boy in less than twenty-four hours. I couldn't have pruned that dead branch from my empire better myself."*
I raised my weapon into the smoke, tears of fury burning in my eyes. "Show yourself, you coward!"
*"All in good time, my sweet heir,"* the voice replied, followed by the deafening sound of automatic rifle fire engaging Marcus’s perimeter team. *"You brought me back my signet ring. You brought me back my vault. And best of all... you brought me Adrian Voss's head on a silver platter. Take them alive. Especially my daughter."*
Adrian pulled me behind a thick marble column as a hail of armor-piercing rounds chewed into the stone above our heads, showering us with pulverized dust.
His face was bleeding from a glass scratch, but his silver eyes locked onto mine with an intensity that defied the storm of bullets raging around us. He reached out, cupping the back of my neck, pulling my forehead against his.
"Sophie," he whispered, his voice calm, steady, and unbreakable amidst the roaring gunfire. "Look at me. Do you trust me?"
"With my life," I choked out, my heart hammering against my ribs.
"Then we don't surrender," Adrian said, pulling an emergency detonator from his pocket—the trigger to the underground vault's scuttling charges. "If your father wants his empire back, he's going to have to walk through hell to get it."
May you like
Across the smoke-filled room, a tall figure in a tailored black overcoat stepped off the repelling line into the shattered ballroom, his silver dragon ring catching the glare of the emergency lights.
And through the drifting smoke, my father smiled.
