Chapter 19 - The Silver Trap

Chaos exploded like a detonated grenade.

Reporters surged forward, camera flashes firing in blinding strobes, shutters clicking like machine guns.

*"Sophie Drake! Look here!"*

*"Adrian Voss is alive!"*

*"Is it true you detonated the vessel?!"*

Mayor Sterling scrambled backward, his face purple with rage. "Security! SWAT! Shoot them! They are armed fugitives! Take them down right now!"

Fourteen Ironclad Tactical mercenaries instantly drew their weapons, raising automatic carbines toward the stage. But before a single finger could squeeze a trigger, Adrian raised his right hand and snapped his fingers.

Every digital screen in the ballroom—the four massive broadcast monitors behind the stage, the teleprompters, even the live video trucks parked outside—flickered violently and went black.

A heartbeat later, a new image replaced the city logo: **THE STERLING DOSSIER.**

A booming voice resonated from the stadium speakers—not mine, and not Adrian’s. It was the recorded, unmistakable voice of Julian Sterling, recorded forty-eight hours ago in his private cabin aboard the scuttled vessel:

*"...Make sure the charges are set on the lower hull. If Adrian Voss and the Drake girl drown, Mayor Sterling gets another five million in his Cayman account. He’ll sign the emergency declaration within ten minutes of the blast. The city will be ours to plunder..."*

The ballroom gasped. Several city aldermen visibly stumbled backward into their chairs. Two camera crews instinctively pivoted their lenses away from us and aimed them directly at Julian’s face, which was now trembling with hysterical panic.

"Turn it off!" Julian shrieked, clawing at his security chief’s shoulder. "Kill the power! Kill them both! Now!"

The lead Ironclad mercenary stepped forward, raising his submachine gun directly at my chest.

Adrian didn't hesitate. In a blur of lethal speed, he closed the distance between them, seized the mercenary’s wrist, and twisted it with a sickening snap. The gun clattered to the marble floor. Adrian drove his elbow into the man’s throat, spun him around as a human shield as three suppressed bullets tore through the mercenary's vest, and drew his own .45 from beneath his tuxedo jacket.

*Crack! Crack!*

Two Ironclad guards dropped to the floor, shot cleanly through their knees.

The ballroom erupted into screaming pandemonium. Socialites scrambled over chairs, knocking over champagne flutes, ducking beneath tables as Adrian’s tactical operators, led by Marcus, breached the side doors in coordinated formation, cutting off the exits and subduing the corrupt guards with surgical precision.

I didn't run. I didn't flinch.

I walked straight across the stage toward Julian, who was scrambling backward, knocking over the podium, his tailored suit tangling in microphone cables.

"Stay back!" Julian screamed, finally pulling his uninjured arm from his sling, revealing a small, chrome-plated derringer pistol. "I'll kill you, Sophie! I swear to God I'll blow your head off!"

"You had five years to kill me, Julian," I said softly, stepping over the fallen microphones, my heels clicking rhythmically on the marble. "You preferred to watch me starve. You enjoyed having your managers spit on me, dock my pay, and treat me like trash on the floor of your restaurants."

He raised the gun, his hand shaking violently. "You were nothing! A gutter rat! Your father died a beggar!"

"My father died protecting this city from your family of leeches," I growled, reaching into my gown and drawing the ceramic blade.

With blinding speed, I closed the gap. Before Julian could pull the trigger, I slapped his wrist aside, drove the pommel of the dagger into his broken shoulder, and watched him collapse to his knees with a blood-curdling scream of agony.

The chrome pistol spun across the stage, stopping directly at Adrian’s polished leather shoes.

Adrian rested his foot on the weapon, looking down at Julian like a speck of dust on a windshield.

"It's over, Julian," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a register that made the entire hall vibrate. "Your accounts are frozen. The Department of Justice has your wire transfers. Your mayor is currently being detained by the FBI at the side exit. You have nothing."

Julian was weeping on the floor, clutching his bleeding shoulder, blood pooling on the white marble beneath the emerald glow of my necklace.

"You think... you think you won?" Julian wheezed, suddenly looking up through his matted blond hair, a grotesque, bloody grin stretching across his teeth. "You think... this was all me, Voss?"

Adrian froze, his silver eyes narrowing into lethal slits. "What did you say?"

Julian coughed out a mouthful of blood, laughing hysterically. "I was just the errand boy, Voss! Did you really think a city mayor and a hedge fund manager could dismantle the Drake family alone? Look at the screens, Sophie! Look at who authorized the final transfer of your grandfather's trust!"

I turned toward the massive center monitor.

The automated financial logs were still scrolling, but at the very bottom of the primary ledger—the master signature that had liquidated the Drake empire and ordered the hits twenty years ago—was a digital certificate that made my heart stop.

It wasn't Julian's father's name.

It was a name that had been carved on a headstone in Graceland Cemetery for fifteen years.

*Dominic Drake.*

My father.
