Chapter 8 - The Surgeon’s Scalpel
The rain outside drummed against the reinforced glass of the underground bunker.
We were back in the clinic. Dr. Vance had survived the ambush by sealing himself inside an old bank vault beneath his basement floor.
Now, the room was silent save for the hiss of the oxygen tank and the rhythmic *beep* of the heart monitor.
Orson lay flat on the operating table.
His right arm was strapped securely to a steel arm-board under the blazing surgical lights. The skin of his forearm had turned an alarming shade of dark indigo. The thallium was hours away from reaching his pericardium.
"There's no time to transfer him to a private hospital," Dr. Vance said, his hands scrubbing with antimicrobial soap. "If we don't extract the shard right now, his heart will stop by sunrise."
"I can't give him general anesthesia," Vance added, turning to me with haunted eyes. "His blood pressure is sixty over forty. If I put him under, his heart will give out on the table."
I looked at Orson.
He was fully awake. His jaw was clenched so hard the muscles in his neck stood out like iron cables.
"Do it raw," Orson rasped, his eyes locking onto mine. "Give me a leather strap for my teeth. Just get the poison out."
"Mr. Dramore, the pain will be unbearable," Vance warned, his voice trembling. "I have to slice through scar tissue, retract the median nerve, and scrape the bone where the palladium has fused. The human nervous system cannot endure that level of agony without going into shock."
"I can," Orson said.
Then he looked at me. His gray eyes, usually so cold and impenetrable, were raw with an emotion that made my chest ache.
"Rosie."
"I'm here," I said, stepping to the side of the operating table.
"Hold my left hand."
"Orson—"
"Hold my hand, Rosie. If you hold it, I won't move."
I swallowed the lump in my throat. I reached down and laced my fingers through his large, calloused left hand. His grip closed around mine with desperate, crushing warmth.
Dr. Vance opened the brass-cornered ledger I had retrieved. On page forty-two, my grandfather’s neat, sloping handwriting detailed the exact antidote.
"The chelating solution," Vance said, his voice tightening. "Miss Fenomore, you must administer the amber drops with a glass pipette directly onto the incision as I cut. If the chemical touches the exposed nerve before the shard is neutralized, it will burn the tissue. You have to be precise. Jeweler's precision."
"I can do it," I said, my voice surprisingly steady.
I picked up the glass pipette. I drew the amber fluid from my grandfather’s vial.
Vance took a deep breath, picked up the scalpel, and lowered it to Orson’s right wrist.
"Beginning now."
The blade pierced the flesh.
Orson’s entire body went rigid as stone. A guttural, muffled roar tore through his clenched teeth, his head arching back against the vinyl table. The veins in his neck bulged, purple and strained.
His left hand squeezed mine with enough pressure to bruise the bone, but I didn't pull away. I leaned over him, our faces inches apart.
"Look at me, Orson," I commanded, tears streaming down my cheeks. "Look at my eyes. Don't look at the blade. Look at me."
His gray eyes snapped to mine, wild with unimaginable pain, dilated with agony.
"I've got you," I whispered, my voice fierce and unbroken. "I'm not letting go. Stay with me, Orson. Stay with me!"
Beneath Vance’s scalpel, the blackened blood welled up.
"Now, Rosie! The drops!" Vance shouted.
With absolute, unshakeable precision, my hand hovered over the open incision. I released three drops of the amber solution directly into the exposed cavity.
The moment the liquid hit the silver shard, a tiny plume of white vapor hissed from the wound. The dark indigo discoloration in the surrounding flesh began to recede, retreating like a tide.
"It's working!" Vance cried, sweat blinding him behind his glasses. "The alloy is softening! The barbs are releasing!"
Vance reached in with surgical forceps.
*Click.*
The steel prongs clamped onto the jagged edge of the *Crying Viper*.
Orson’s body convulsed. A blood-curdling groan escaped his throat, his chest heaving, his left fingers digging into mine so deeply I felt his fingernails bite into my skin.
"Hold him!" Vance yelled.
"Orson, look at me!" I screamed, leaning down until my lips brushed his burning forehead. "Almost there! Stay with me, damn you! I need you!"
With a slow, agonizingly steady pull, Dr. Vance extracted the shard.
*CLINK.*
The bloody, silver-palladium bullet fragment dropped into the stainless steel basin.
Instantly, the tension in Orson’s body snapped.
His head fell back against the table. His chest rose and fell in deep, shuddering gasps. The horrific, purplish-blue halo around his wrist vanished, replaced by the clean, bright red of healthy, oxygenated blood.
Dr. Vance immediately began flushing the wound with sterile saline and rapid suturing.
"The nerve is intact," Vance whispered, laughing in hysterical relief. "By the grace of God, the nerve didn't tear. The poison is out."
I leaned over the table, my breath coming in ragged sobs, my left hand still locked tightly in Orson’s.
Slowly, his eyes opened.
The fever had broken. The gray irises were clear, sharp, and unmistakably alive.
He looked down at our joined hands.
Then, for the first time in nine years, the fingers of Orson Dramore’s right hand moved.
Slowly, shakily, yet with deliberate purpose, his right index finger twitched. Then his thumb. Then his entire right palm flexed, the muscles firing in clean, unbroken harmony.
A slow, terrifyingly beautiful smile spread across Orson’s lips.
He reached up with his newly freed right hand. His bare, scarred fingers gently touched my cheek, wiping away the tears that were still falling.
"You brought me back from the grave, Rosie," he whispered, his voice thick with emotion.
"You're not safe yet," I sniffled, leaning into his touch. "Moretti still has the city."
Orson’s eyes hardened into twin chips of diamond.
May you like
"Moretti has the city until midnight," Orson said, his voice dropping into a deadly, freezing cadence. "After that, I take back what's mine. And I'm taking you with me."
