Chapter 28 - The Second Key Awakens
The Great Chamber of the Vault was an amphitheater of impossible scale.
Suspended directly beneath the lakebed of Michigan, a colossal sphere of liquid metal—three stories tall—floated silently in the center of the room, held in stasis by seven massive hydraulic anchoring rings anchored into the bedrock. This was the Mother-Vein: the heart of the ancient power that could either grant limitless energy or wipe out entire civilizations with a single kinetic pulse.
Standing on the central observation platform was a man in his late fifties, dressed in a tailored crimson velvet suit with gold lapel pins bearing the double-headed serpent of the Silver Dawn.
High Chancellor Gideon.
Surrounding him were twenty elite heavy-armored paladins, their high-tech resonance cannons aimed at the central sphere. Inserted into the second anchoring ring was a glowing, golden obelisk—the Second Key recovered from the catacombs of Vienna.
The sphere was already vibrating violently. Above us, the ceiling groaned under millions of tons of lake water. Fissures were beginning to snake across the basalt arches.
"You are late, Don Thorne," Gideon said, his voice echoing across the chamber with eerie calm through a directional sound system. "Though I suppose I must thank you. Without the Fenomore girl’s lineage to ignite the catalytic reaction, the Vienna Key would have taken days to destabilize the stasis rings."
"Step away from the console, Gideon," Orson said, striding onto the platform, his alloy hand crackling with devastating power. "You're out of your jurisdiction. This city doesn't bow to the old dynasties of Europe."
Gideon laughed—a cold, brittle sound that echoed off the rising water below. "You think this is about territory? You truly have the mind of a common gangster! We are not here to steal gold, Thorne! We are here to cleanse the slate! When the Mother-Vein discharges, the tectonic shockwave will collapse the eastern seaboard of this degenerate continent. From the ashes, the Order will rebuild the empire of the First Exiles!"
"Not while I breathe," Orson growled.
"Then your breath ends now," Gideon sneered, snapping his fingers. "Paladins, fire!"
The battle that erupted was unlike anything the Chicago mob had ever witnessed.
Resonance cannons fired beams of pressurized sonic energy that pulverized our stone cover. Marco and the capos returned fire with the Fenomore alloy rounds, their armor-piercing bullets ripping through the paladins' shields in bursts of golden shrapnel.
I sprinted toward the main control dais, ducking beneath a wave of sonic fire that melted the railing behind me. My objective was clear: I had to reach the central terminal and reverse the harmonic sequence of the Vienna Key before the stasis sphere reached critical mass.
Two paladins blocked my path, their electro-spears crackling with blue plasma.
"Rosie, duck!" Orson’s voice boomed.
I hit the floor. Orson vaulted over me, his right hand glowing like a miniature sun. He caught the first spear by the blade, channeling the electrical surge directly into his alloy forearm without suffering a scratch. With a savage twist, he impaled the second paladin with his own comrade's weapon, then drove his titanium fist into the first guard's chest plate, shattering the titanium-weave armor like brittle ice.
"Go!" Orson yelled, blood running down his forehead from a shrapnel graze. "Reverse the lock! I'll hold Gideon!"
I scrambled to the terminal. The ancient console was written in the same cuneiform glyphs as Grandfather's final ledger. My bloody hands flew across the metallic dials, matching the frequencies.
*Seven tones. Three octaves. One pulse.*
Behind me, the sound of brutal, hand-to-hand combat reached a fever pitch as Orson collided with Chancellor Gideon, who had drawn a heavy broadsword forged entirely from pure, dark-violet Fenomore alloy.

Metal collided with metal, sending shockwaves that shook the very foundations of the subterranean cathedral.
