Chapter 29 - The Crucible of Blood and Iron
Gideon was no mere bureaucrat. Despite his age, he fought with terrifying speed and the refined lethality of an ancient swordsman trained since childhood. His broadsword whistled through the air, carving deep trenches into the stone flooring as Orson deflected the blows with his reinforced titanium arm.
"You fight well for a dog raised in the alleys of Illinois!" Gideon mocked, swinging a brutal horizontal slash that sliced through Orson's shoulder, spraying dark crimson across the platform.
Orson didn't even flinch. He used the momentum of the blow to step inside Gideon's guard. His left fist slammed into Gideon’s jaw, followed by an earth-shattering uppercut from his right alloy hand that lifted the Chancellor off his feet and sent him crashing against the primary stasis pillar.
The impact dislodged the Vienna Key.
The central sphere of liquid alloy destabilized. A deafening, high-pitched harmonic shriek tore through the chamber, shattering our eardrums. Deep cracks exploded across the ceiling.
Streams of freezing water from Lake Michigan began pouring through the fissures, descending in heavy waterfalls that flooded the lower platforms within seconds.
"The seal is failing!" Marco screamed over the rising deluge, firing his last magazine into the retreating paladins. "The whole damn lake is coming down on us!"
"Rosie! Can you reset it?" Orson shouted, pinning a struggling Gideon to the floor with his boot on the Chancellor’s throat.
"I can't!" I shouted back, panic clawing at my throat as I frantically tried to align the hydraulic glyphs. "The Vienna Key is out of sequence! It needs the catalyst! The system requires the Seventh Key to lock down the stasis rings permanently!"
Gideon coughed up blood beneath Orson's boot, laughing hysterically. "You fool! The Seventh Key requires total synchronization! If he inserts his hand into the core receptacle while the liquid is destabilized, the energy transfer will tear him apart at the cellular level! You’ll kill him, Fenomore! The Warden will burn to ash!"
Orson looked across the flooded platform at me. His suit was torn, his body bruised and bleeding, but his eyes were completely calm. In that split second, amid the roaring waterfalls, the collapsing stone, and the impending doom of our entire city, there was no fear in him. Only an absolute, unwavering certainty.
"Orson, no!" I screamed, realizing what he was planning. "There has to be another way! We can find another harmonic frequency!"
"There’s no time, Rosie," Orson said softly, his voice carrying clearly through the telepathic resonance of the alloy that bound us. "This is why your grandfather rebuilt me. This is why I survived Vincent's hit nine years ago. I didn't survive to be a mob boss. I survived to keep you safe."
He kicked Gideon unconscious with a single blow, spun around, and sprinted through the rising water toward the central receptacle directly beneath the roaring, three-story sphere of liquid alloy.
"Orson, stop! If you die, I won't survive this either!" I sobbed, abandoning the console and sprinting toward him through the knee-deep water.
Orson reached the pedestal. He turned back, his gaze locked onto mine with a tenderness that shattered my soul.
"Live, my Queen," he whispered.

He thrust his right titanium hand directly into the blinding white-hot core of the Seventh Receptacle.
