Chapter 9 - VENGEANCE AND DELIVERANCE

Three months later.
The Federal Courthouse in Lower Manhattan was besieged by an army of news reporters, broadcast vans, and armed federal marshals. The trial of the century was concluding.
Dominic Moretti, dressed in an immaculate charcoal-grey three-piece suit, sat in the front row of the gallery. Beside him sat Hannah, radiant in a tailored navy-blue dress, her hand resting securely in his. Adrian sat on her other side, looking sharper and more at peace than he had in years.
At the defense table sat Richard Sterling and Vanessa Sterling.
They were stripped of their wealth, their bespoke jewelry, and their manufactured nobility. Richard sat in a wheelchair, his shoulder permanently stiffened from Hannah’s gunshot, his face gaunt and hollow. Vanessa wore a drab prison jumpsuit, her blonde hair dull and tied back in an unkempt ponytail. Her hands were chained to her waist.
The federal judge, a woman known for her merciless stance on corporate corruption, adjusted her spectacles and read the unanimous verdict:
*“On the counts of first-degree murder of Elena Moretti, the jury finds the defendant, Vanessa Sterling, GUILTY.”*
Vanessa let out a strangled, breathless sob, slumping over the table.
*“On the counts of conspiracy to commit murder, corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, and racketeering, the jury finds the defendant, Richard Sterling, GUILTY on all seventy-four counts.”*
The judge looked down at the disgraced pair with utter disdain.
“Richard Sterling, you are hereby sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, to be served at the ADX Florence supermax facility. Vanessa Sterling, for the cold-blooded and premeditated poisoning and murder of Elena Moretti, you are sentenced to life imprisonment without parole at the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury.”
The judge slammed her gavel down with a sharp, definitive crack.
*“Court is adjourned.”*
U.S. Marshals immediately moved in, hauling the sobbing Vanessa to her feet. As she was led toward the side exit, her eyes locked onto Dominic and Hannah.
Vanessa’s face twisted into an expression of raw, unadulterated hatred and despair. She saw Dominic’s arm wrapped protectively around Hannah’s waist. She saw the profound devotion in his eyes—a look he had never, not once, given her.
“DOMINIC!” Vanessa shrieked as the guards dragged her backward. “LOOK AT ME! I WAS SUPPOSED TO BE THE QUEEN! THAT MAID IS NOTHING! SHE’S NOTHING!”
Dominic did not even blink. He didn't offer her a single word of spite. He simply turned his back on her, guiding Hannah toward the exit.
In that simple, deliberate turn of his shoulder, Vanessa Sterling ceased to exist in his world.
Outside the courthouse, a wall of reporters thrust microphones and cameras in their faces.
“Don Moretti! Do you have a comment on the Sterling conviction?”
“Miss Collins! What will happen to the forty-nine percent controlling interest in the foundation?”
Dominic raised one hand. The crowd of reporters immediately fell silent, sensing the commanding authority of the man who had brought down one of the most corrupt political dynasties in New York history.
“The Moretti family has severed all ties with organized criminal enterprises,” Dominic announced clearly, his voice carrying over the throng of journalists. “Effective today, the Moretti-Sterling Logistics Foundation has been completely dissolved. In its place, the Elena Moretti Memorial Medical Trust has been established.”
He looked down at Hannah with pride shining in his eyes.
“The trust will be entirely directed and managed by Hannah Collins. Every dollar stolen by the Sterlings has been recovered and will be distributed to free pediatric clinics, dialysis research, and regional nursing scholarships across the tri-state area. Justice has been served. And Elena is finally resting in peace.”
Dominic guided Hannah down the courthouse steps toward his waiting town car, completely ignoring the flurry of camera flashes.
Inside the quiet sanctuary of the vehicle, Hannah leaned her head against Dominic’s shoulder, letting out a long, cathartic breath.
“It’s really over,” she whispered.
Dominic wrapped his arm around her, kissing the top of her head.

“No, Hannah,” Dominic smiled softly. “It’s just beginning.”
