Chapter 6 - THE SPIDER'S WEB UNRAVELS

Dawn broke over the Hudson River, but the sky remained an ominous slate gray.
The fortified Moretti compound was under total lockdown. Thirty heavily armed men patrolled the stone walls, their automatic rifles slung across tactical vests. In the private medical wing on the third floor of the mansion, Margaret Vale rested comfortably in an intensive care suite, attended by Dominic’s personal physician and two specialized nurses. Hannah sat beside her mother, holding her hand, finally breathing without the crushing terror that had ruled her life for three years.
Down in the great foyer, the final stage of the trap was being set.
Vanessa Sterling had been brought up from the wine cellar. She was disheveled, her designer gown crumpled, her makeup smeared with dried tears of rage. But when she saw Dominic standing at the top of the marble staircase, fully armed, with Adrian beside him, her arrogance returned like a sudden flare of venom.
“You’re insane, Dominic!” Vanessa screamed, pulling against the leather restraints that bound her to a high-backed wooden chair. “My father knows I’m here! When he realizes I’ve been detained against my will, he will send federal marshals to tear this house apart stone by stone!”
Dominic descended the staircase slowly. In his hand, he carried a portable speaker.
“Your father is currently sitting in his corner office on Wall Street,” Dominic said evenly. “He received a call two hours ago from Thomas Cole. Thomas told him that Margaret Vale and Hannah Collins were dead... and that the documents were destroyed.”
Vanessa’s eyes lit up with a sickening triumph. “Then you have nothing! It’s your word against mine! And the courts will always believe the Sterling family!”
“Thomas Cole is currently in our subterranean holding cells, Vanessa,” Adrian said, leaning against the banister with a dark smirk. “And he sang like a canary. He signed a thirty-page sworn confession in exchange for us not tossing him out of an airplane over the Atlantic.”
Vanessa’s smile froze. Her skin turned an ashen shade of grey.
“He... he lied,” she stammered. “He’s a mercenary! You can’t trust a criminal!”
“Can I trust this?” Dominic asked.
He pressed the *PLAY* button on the speaker.
Elena’s voice filled the cavernous foyer—clear, trembling, but resolute:
*“I know what you put in the tea, Vanessa. Margaret took a sample to the university lab yesterday. Digitalis. You’ve been poisoning me for three months.”*
Then, Vanessa’s voice crackled through the speaker, crisp, haughty, and chillingly cruel:
*“You should have kept your mouth shut, Elena. Dominic was going to leave you anyway. You couldn't give him an heir. You couldn't give him political power. My father and I are giving him an empire. You’re just an obstacle.”*
*“Dominic loves me!”* Elena wept on the tape. *“He will never marry you if he knows what you did!”*
*“Dominic will believe whatever the coroner tells him,”* Vanessa’s voice replied coldly. *“Thomas, handle her. Make it look like she slipped.”*
A terrifying scream followed, followed by the sickening thud of a body tumbling down seventeen marble steps.
Then, silence.
Dominic hit the stop button.
The silence that followed was deafening. Every guard standing along the perimeter of the room had their eyes fixed on Vanessa. Men who had seen unspeakable violence in syndicate wars looked at her with pure disgust.
Vanessa began to hyperventilate. “Dominic... please. It was my father! He forced me! He told me that if I didn't marry you, the family would go bankrupt! Dominic, I loved you! Everything I did, I did so we could be together!”
Dominic walked until he was standing directly over her. He reached down, took her chin in his gloved hand, and forced her head up so she had to look directly into his eyes.
“You never loved me,” Dominic whispered, his voice trembling with an ancient, terrifying grief. “You loved the power of the Moretti name. You loved the blood money you could steal from sick children. You walked into this house, slept in the bed of the woman you murdered, and thought you were a queen.”
He released her chin as if touching filth.
“You are not going to the police, Vanessa,” Dominic said.
Vanessa’s eyes widened with sheer horror. “You’re going to kill me?”
“Death is too easy for you,” Dominic replied coldly. “The federal organized crime division and the Securities and Exchange Commission have just received twenty gigabytes of unredacted financial records showing every illegal transfer your father made through his offshore shell banks. At this very second, the FBI is raiding your family’s estate in the Hamptons. Your father’s bank accounts are frozen. The Sterling name is ruined.”
He turned to his capos.
“Take her to the federal building downtown,” Dominic commanded. “Hand her over to the United States District Attorney along with Elena’s tape. Let her spend the rest of her miserable life in a maximum-security federal penitentiary, wearing an orange jumpsuit and remembering every step of that staircase.”
“NO! DOMINIC, PLEASE!” Vanessa shrieked as two guards hauled her out of the chair, dragging her toward the heavy doors. “YOU CAN’T DO THIS TO ME! I AM A STERLING! DOMINIC!”
Her screams faded as the heavy oak doors slammed shut behind her.
Dominic stood alone in the center of the foyer, looking up at the chandelier. A profound weight, four years of suffocating guilt and unanswered questions, finally lifted from his shoulders. Elena was avenged.
But up on the mezzanine, the sound of breaking glass shattered the brief moment of peace.
Adrian came running out of the private quarters, his weapon drawn.

“DOMINIC!” Adrian shouted, pure panic in his voice. “The medical wing! A sniper from the tree line just took out the perimeter guards! Richard Sterling isn't in Wall Street—he’s here!”
