Chapter 10 - WHERE THE LIGHT FALLS

Six months later. Spring had arrived in the Hudson Valley.

The Moretti estate was no longer a cold, shadowy fortress of secrets and mourning. The heavy velvet drapes had been replaced with airy, cream-colored linens that let the golden spring sunlight flood every corner of the grand halls. The gardens were blooming with white hydrangeas, roses, and lavender.

In the west-facing gallery, the antique six-foot mirror had been completely restored.

Its carved wooden frame gleamed with polished mahogany. It hung proudly opposite the tall west windows. But on the back, preserved under a clear sheet of protective museum-grade acrylic, remained the original faded blue ink:

*MARGARET VALE — OCTOBER 17, 2021.*

*WHERE THE LIGHT FALLS.*

And beneath it, in Dominic’s sharp, masculine handwriting, a new line had been added:

*RESTORED BY HANNAH COLLINS — JUSTICE RECLAIMED.*

Down on the great lawn overlooking the sparkling river, a small, intimate gathering had assembled.

There were no corrupt politicians, no mafia bosses with hidden agendas, and no bodyguards standing with assault rifles. There was only family.

Adrian stood near the stone archway, laughing heartily as he poured champagne for Margaret Vale. Margaret looked vibrant and healthy; her kidney transplant had been a complete success two months prior, and she was now the head administrator of the newly opened Elena Moretti Free Clinic in Brooklyn.

A gentle acoustic guitar played softly beneath the blooming cherry blossom trees.

Dominic stood under the floral archway, wearing an impeccably tailored black tuxedo. He looked striking, his broad shoulders relaxed, his dark eyes fixed entirely on the stone pathway leading down from the terrace.

The music shifted into a timeless, elegant melody.

Hannah appeared at the top of the terrace, walking on the arm of her mother.

Hannah looked breathtaking. Her wedding gown was an ethereal masterpiece of ivory silk and delicate lace, flowing behind her like water. Her dark auburn hair was styled in soft waves adorned with tiny pearls. In her hands, she carried a bouquet of white lilies and lavender—Elena’s favorite flowers.

When Dominic saw her, his breath caught in his throat. The man who had faced down federal indictments, rival cartels, and mortal danger felt his knees weaken at the sheer beauty of the woman walking toward him.

Margaret brought Hannah to the altar, placing her daughter’s hand into Dominic’s strong palm.

“Take care of her, Dominic,” Margaret whispered, her eyes shining with joyful tears.

“With my life, Margaret,” Dominic answered with absolute reverence. “With every breath I take.”

Adrian stepped forward to serve as Dominic’s best man. The ceremony was simple, profound, and filled with genuine vows of devotion, trust, and enduring love.

When the minister finally proclaimed, “I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss your bride,” Dominic didn't hesitate.

He wrapped his arms around Hannah’s waist, lifting her slightly off her feet as he brought his lips down onto hers. The small crowd erupted into cheers and applause. Adrian whistled loudly, while Margaret wiped tears of joy from her cheeks.

Hannah laughed against Dominic’s lips as he set her down, burying her face into the crook of his neck.

“I love you, Dominic,” she whispered against his skin.

“I love you, Hannah,” he replied, his voice thick with emotion. “You brought the light back into this house. You saved me.”

Later that evening, as the reception moved into the softly lit courtyard, the sun began to dip below the western horizon.

Dominic took Hannah’s hand and led her quietly away from the celebration, guiding her up the grand staircase to the west gallery.

The room was bathed in the warm, fiery glow of the sunset.

The low golden rays streamed through the tall French windows, striking the polished glass of the antique mirror. Just as it had on the day Elena hid her final secret, the beam of sunlight reflected perfectly across the room, illuminating a newly placed portrait on the mantelpiece.

It was an oil painting of Elena, smiling warmly, peaceful and immortalized in light.

Beside her portrait sat a small brass plaque inscribed with words from the clinic’s founding charter:

*“Nothing hidden in darkness shall remain unhealed. Where the light falls, love shall reign.”*

Hannah leaned her head against Dominic’s shoulder as his arms wrapped securely around her waist from behind. They stood together in the warm amber light, watching the sunset cast long, peaceful shadows across the valley.

The blood had been washed away.

The ghosts were at peace.

And in the arms of the mafia boss who had chosen honor over vengeance, the young woman who had once been an invisible, bleeding maid stood as the beloved, undisputed queen of his heart.
