Chapter 8 - The Shadow at the Gates

While the Gary hangar fell silent under Moretti control, twenty miles north, at the fortified Lakefront Compound, a different kind of storm was brewing.
The Lakefront estate was an impregnable fortress—surrounded by twelve-foot stone walls topped with razor wire, infrared motion detectors, and a dedicated security outpost. Inside the grand living room, a roaring fire threw warm amber light across the hardwood floors.
Grace was fast asleep on the oversized sofa, tucked beneath Clara’s cashmere blanket, her little hand still clutching the plush rabbit. Martha sat in an armchair nearby, nodding off from sheer emotional exhaustion.
Clara stood by the panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the heavy snow blanket the shoreline of Lake Michigan. Her arms were wrapped around her belly. A strange, persistent tightness had begun radiating across her lower back twenty minutes earlier—not the sharp, acute spasms of stress she had experienced on the staircase, but a deep, rhythmic ache that signaled the true beginning of the end.
Julianna entered the room, holding two cups of chamomile tea. She handed one to Clara. "You should be sitting down. Harris said you need bed rest."
"The baby is restless," Clara said with a faint smile, taking a sip of the warm tea. "I think she knows her father is out there."
Julianna looked at Clara thoughtfully. "You call him her father. You don't resent it? Knowing that Daniel kept this secret from you?"
Clara shook her head gently, her eyes reflecting the dancing firelight. "Daniel loved me with every piece of his soul, Julianna. He didn't tell me because he was protecting me. If I had known the truth, Richard would have seen it in my eyes the day they questioned me. Daniel took the burden entirely on himself. And now... seeing Grace, knowing that the child I carry shares her blood, shares Vincent’s blood... it doesn't feel like a lie. It feels like Daniel gave me a purpose. A family."
Suddenly, the lights throughout the mansion flickered and died.
Emergency red backup lights clicked on instantly with a low hum, bathing the room in a bloody crimson glow.
Julianna’s tea cup shattered on the floor. Her hand was instantly inside her jacket, drawing a suppressed Glock 19. "The perimeter sensors just tripped on the north gate."
"Vincent?" Clara asked, her heart leaping into her throat.
"Vincent uses the west gate, and he clears his arrival via encrypted comms," Julianna said, her voice dropping into cold tactical precision. "Someone just breached the outer wall."
From the grounds outside, the sudden, sharp crack of a sniper rifle echoed through the blizzard. A Moretti guard stationed by the fountain fell into the snow.
"Martha! Wake up!" Julianna hissed, grabbing Grace from the couch and thrusting the drowsy child into Martha’s arms. "Take Grace to the reinforced panic room beneath the library! Lock the vault from the inside and do not open it for anyone except Vincent or me!"
"Clara, come with us!" Martha cried, clutching Grace to her chest.
A sharp, intense contraction ripped through Clara’s abdomen. She gasped, doubling over, clutching the edge of the mahogany sideboard as her knees buckled.
"Clara!" Julianna caught her arm.
"My water..." Clara whispered through clenched teeth, her forehead instantly drenched in cold sweat. "Julianna... my water just broke."
Outside, heavy gunfire erupted at the front portico. The heavy oak doors rattled under the impact of a breaching ram.
"It’s not Richard’s men," Julianna realized, checking the security feed on her phone before the display went to static. "It’s the remnants of the Sterling board’s loyalists—mercenaries hired by Vanessa’s maternal family, the Van Dorens. They know Richard fell. They’re trying to eliminate the bloodline to seize the estate's trust assets!"
"Go with Martha!" Clara urged, breathing heavily, trying to fight the tidal wave of labor pains. "Protect Grace! I’ll hide in the pantry—"
"I’m not leaving you," Julianna said, racking the slide of her weapon. "You’re carrying my niece. And Vincent would tear the world apart if I let a single hair on your head be harmed."
The heavy front doors buckled with a deafening crash. Glass shattered in the grand entrance hall. Heavy combat boots stomped across the marble.
"Spread out!" a rough voice shouted in the hallway. "Find the girl and the pregnant maid! Leave no witnesses!"
Julianna pushed Clara into the deep alcove behind the library’s revolving bookshelf. "Stay here. Stay silent. Whatever happens, do not scream."
Clara pressed her hands over her mouth as Julianna stepped out into the crimson-lit hallway.
Gunfire exploded in the library. Three rapid shots from Julianna’s weapon were answered by the deafening roar of a submachine gun. Wood splinters flew through the air like shrapnel. Clara heard a heavy body hit the floor, followed by a curse in French.
Another contraction seized Clara’s body, so violent she had to bite her own lower lip until the metallic taste of blood filled her mouth to keep from crying out. She sank to the floor of the alcove, her fingers digging into the carpet, fighting for every breath.
*Not now,* she prayed desperately, tears blinding her eyes. *Daniel, watch over me. Vincent, please... please come back.*
Footsteps approached the bookshelf.
A heavy hand grabbed the edge of the wood, pulling the secret door open. A mercenary clad in gray tactical winter camouflage stood there, his assault rifle raised, his face masked in black neoprene. His cold, soulless eyes locked onto Clara huddled on the floor.
He raised the barrel directly at her forehead.
"Target acquired," the mercenary muttered into his collar mic.
Before his finger could tighten on the trigger, a sound shattered the room—a roar that sounded less like a man and more like an ancient predator unleashed from hell.
A heavy black arm slammed around the mercenary’s neck from behind.
Vincent Moretti drove the man’s skull directly into the stone doorframe with a sickening, definitive crunch. The mercenary’s body went limp, dropping to the floor like an empty sack.
Vincent stood in the doorway. His coat was covered in snow and spent brass. In his right hand, he held a heavy .45-caliber pistol, smoke still curling from the chamber.
He dropped the gun. He dropped to his knees.

"Clara," he choked out, scooping her into his powerful arms, lifting her against his chest as another contraction wracked her entire body. "I’m here. I’m here, little bird. I’ve got you."
