Chapter 6 - The Architect of Shadows

The revelation hung in the cold farmhouse air like a detonated shell.

Clara looked down at her hands, which were shaking uncontrollably against the fabric of her dress. The life growing within her—the baby she had thought was the final, tragic memory of her dead husband—was inextricably linked to the towering mafia boss who now stood over her, his broad chest rising and falling with ragged, uneven breaths.

Vincent sank down on one knee beside Clara’s chair. He didn't speak immediately. His large, scarred hand hovered over her belly, hesitating with a profound, terrifying reverence.

"Clara," he whispered, looking up into her tear-filled hazel eyes. "May I?"

She nodded, unable to form words.

When his palm touched the gentle slope of her abdomen, the baby kicked—strong, decisive, against the warmth of his skin. Vincent closed his eyes, a single tear escaping his lashes and tracing a path down the hard line of his jaw.

"Daniel didn't just save Grace," Vincent murmured, his voice breaking with an emotion that stripped away every layer of his underworld armor. "He saved both of my children. He gave his life to protect my bloodline."

"He loved them," Clara wept softly. "Daniel always told me that our daughter would be a miracle that bridged two worlds. I never understood what he meant until this moment."

Grace walked over, her little shoes squeaking softly on the floorboards. She rested her small chin on Vincent’s knee, looking at Clara’s stomach with wide, inquisitive eyes. "Is my sister sleeping in there?"

Vincent reached out, drawing Grace against his side while keeping his other hand anchored over Clara’s womb. "Yes, little bird. Your sister is in there. And she’s safe now."

"We won't be safe for long if we stay here," Julianna broke in, her tactical instincts cutting through the emotional gravity of the room. She was looking at a satellite tracker on her smartphone. "Richard has just activated an executive emergency protocol. He’s liquidating Sterling Holdings’ offshore accounts and moving his private mercenary squad—the Vanguard Unit—toward the Chicago airfield. He’s preparing to flee the country to a non-extradition sanctuary in Paraguay."

Vincent’s posture shifted instantly. The tender father vanished, replaced in a heartbeat by the cold, calculating Don of the Moretti syndicate. He stood up, towering over the room.

"He won't reach the airfield," Vincent said, his voice flat and lethal. "Vance."

"Sir," Vance replied, stepping forward from the entryway.

"I want the Lakefront Compound locked down under Omega protocol. Move Clara, Grace, and Martha there under the personal protection of my inner circle. Julianna, you will accompany them and coordinate the surveillance feed."

"Where are you going, Vincent?" Clara asked, her voice tight with panic as she reached out, her fingers catching the cuff of his leather trench coat.

Vincent looked down at her grip. He didn't pull away. Instead, he covered her small hand with his own, squeezing gently. "I am going to end this, Clara. Richard Sterling stole four years of my daughter’s life. He murdered your husband. He terrorized you in my own home. If I leave him alive, none of us will ever be free."

"Vincent, please," Clara whispered, her eyes pleading. "He’s desperate. A cornered animal will do anything."

"Let him try," Vincent said softly, leaning down until his forehead almost touched hers. "I survived the streets of Chicago before I was twenty. Richard Sterling is a lawyer who hides behind hired guns. He has never faced a man who has everything to fight for. Keep my daughters safe, Clara. I will return for you."

May you like

Before she could protest, he turned on his heel and strode out into the swirling morning snow, his trench coat billowing behind him like the wings of a dark avenging angel.
