Chapter 5 - The Sister in the Shadows

The silence that fell over the farmhouse was absolute, broken only by the crackle of pine wood burning in the antique hearth.
Vincent transferred Grace gently to Clara’s arms. The little girl nestled into Clara’s neck without resistance, instinctively trusting the woman who smelled of the same gentle lavender Daniel had always spoken of with reverence.
"Explain," Vincent ordered Martha, his voice vibrating with an intensity that rattled the porcelain teacups on the sideboard. "Elena died four years ago. Her body was never recovered, but Richard Sterling produced autopsy reports from the lake recovery—"
"Richard Sterling produced forged documents!" Martha interrupted, her voice rising with indignation. "Elena didn't drown, Vincent! When Vanessa and Richard threatened to kill Grace in the cradle, Elena knew she couldn't stay. She knew if she stayed in Chicago, Richard would use his network inside your own syndicate to execute both her and the baby. She staged her disappearance to draw Richard’s hunters away from the child!"
"Where is she, Martha?" Vincent whispered, his knuckles whitening as he gripped the edge of the kitchen table.
"She’s in Geneva," Martha replied. "Under treatment at a private clinic. Elena suffered from advanced cardiomyopathy—a genetic heart defect aggravated by her pregnancy. She sacrificed every ounce of her strength to keep Richard’s eyes on Europe while Daniel hid Grace here in the States. The messages you've been receiving on Elena’s phone... they weren't sent by Elena."
Vincent’s brow furrowed. "Then who?"
From the dark hallway leading to the back bedrooms, a woman stepped into the light.
She wore a charcoal-gray turtleneck and black trousers, her dark hair cut into a sharp, functional bob. Her facial structure bore a startling, undeniable resemblance to Elena—the same high cheekbones, the same expressive mouth—but her eyes were colder, hardened by years of clandestine warfare.
"They were sent by me, Vincent," the woman said.
Vincent stepped back, his hand dropping toward the concealed holster beneath his coat before freezing. "Julianna?"
"Hello, Vincent," the woman said softly.
Julianna Vance—Elena’s younger sister, an intelligence analyst who had supposedly severed ties with the family and vanished into Europe six years earlier.
"You?" Vincent exhaled, his mind spinning. "You’ve been orchestrating the data relay?"
"I’ve been hunting Richard Sterling for forty-eight months," Julianna said, stepping into the circle of light. "When Elena collapsed in Zurich two years ago, she made me swear I would bring down the Sterling empire from the inside out. Daniel Bennett was my operative. He was working under my directives to gather evidence that would completely dismantle Richard’s legal and political immunity."
Julianna turned her sharp gaze to Clara. Her expression softened, a deep, sorrowful reverence entering her eyes.
"And you must be Clara," Julianna said gently.
"You knew Daniel?" Clara asked, her voice cracking.
"Daniel was the bravest man I ever worked with," Julianna said, stepping toward Clara and placing a hand over the young widow’s trembling fingers. "He loved you, Clara. Every day he was undercover, his only thought was coming back to you. And he gave his life to protect this child." She reached out, gently smoothing Grace’s curls.
"What is the secret about Clara’s baby?" Vincent interrupted, his voice demanding answers. "The recording said Daniel knew something about Clara's pregnancy that Richard was trying to hide. Harris found hormonal suppressants in her Lakeview medical files!"
Julianna took a deep breath, her eyes darkening. "Lakeview Medical wasn't just managing pregnancies, Vincent. Richard Sterling owned forty percent of that facility. Before Daniel met Clara, Richard’s biotech firm was developing a line of synthetic chromosomal markers designed to track high-value targets through their biological offspring."
She looked directly into Clara’s eyes. "Daniel found out that Richard was planning to use Lakeview to implant tracked embryos into unknowing patients—creating a network of leverage against prominent families. But when Daniel fell in love with you, Clara, he secretly altered your file. He replaced the experimental tracking serum with a high-grade neutralizing agent that rendered Richard’s synthetic markers completely inert. But that’s not all."
Julianna paused, glancing at Grace, then back at Clara.
"The embryo you carry... Daniel discovered that Richard’s lab had misappropriated Elena’s cryo-preserved genetic material from her first fertility treatments with Vincent five years ago."
The room went dead silent.
Clara gasped, her hand flying to her stomach, her knees buckling. Vincent moved in a flash, catching Clara around the waist, lifting her effortlessly and guiding her into a sturdy armchair.
"What are you saying?" Vincent roared, his heart pounding like a war drum in his ears.
"I’m saying," Julianna whispered, "that Richard Sterling was planning to create a genetic heir to the Moretti empire that he could control as a puppet. But Daniel sabotaged the entire project. When you and Daniel went for fertility treatment at Lakeview, Clara... Daniel ensured that the embryo implanted was Vincent and Elena’s second conceived child—sanctified and protected by Daniel’s own blood and name."
Clara stared at Vincent, completely overwhelmed. "The baby... the baby I’m carrying... is—"

"Grace’s biological sister," Julianna said, tears glistening in her sharp eyes. "And Vincent’s daughter."
