Chapter 20 - A Language of Our Own

That evening, we returned to our Lincoln Park brownstone.

The city lights twinkled across Lake Michigan, reflecting off the calm, dark water like a million fallen stars.

We sat together on the wide balcony, wrapped in a single fleece blanket against the cooling breeze. In my lap was an album of photographs—Evan as a boy, Caleb’s mother in her youth, and the pictures of our private, beautiful wedding on the shores of Lake Geneva.

Caleb sat beside me, his arm draped securely around my shoulders, his thumb lazily tracing circles against my collarbone.

He looked out over the skyline—the city he now helped lead, clean, and protect.

He raised his hands into the moonlight, his fingers moving with effortless poetry:

*Fourteen years ago, I thought the world was divided into two things: those who make noise, and those who suffer in silence.*

He turned his head, his dark eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that spanned across all our battles, all our fears, and all our triumphs.

*Then you walked up to my table,* Caleb signed, his lips curving into that warm, unforgettable grin. *And you asked me if I wanted a steak or a quieter father.*

I laughed, a bright, clear sound that Caleb felt through the vibrations against his chest.

I took his hands in mine, our fingers tangling together, a seamless bridge between sound and silence, between the past and the future.

*And what did you choose, Caleb Vale?* I signed back, my eyes shining with love.

Caleb smiled, leaning down until his lips brushed against mine, whispering the words into the night air:

“I chose you.”

The wind off Lake Michigan carried our breath into the starlit sky. We sat together in the quiet—not the heavy silence of secrets, but the deep, eternal language of a love that had defied an empire, conquered the darkness, and built a kingdom of its own.

And as the city slept below us, we knew this was not the end of our story.

It was only the first chapter of our freedom.
