Chapter 19 - Sunrise Over Lake Michigan

Spring turned into summer, and Chicago breathed anew.

The grand reopening of the Vale Community Center on the South Side was a city-wide celebration.

The three-story, state-of-the-art facility featured modern classrooms, vocational training centers, and the largest deaf education wing in the Midwest—named the *Evan Mercer Center for Deaf Youth.*

Hundreds of families gathered on the sunny lawn outside the brick building. Children were laughing, their hands moving with fluid grace in sign language, signing stories to their teachers and parents.

I stood on the stone terrace, watching a group of young boys play basketball on the new court Evan had always dreamed of building.

A pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped around my waist from behind, pulling me gently against a broad, warm chest.

Caleb rested his chin against my head, inhaling the scent of my hair.

*Are you happy?* he signed against my forearm, where I could feel the rhythmic tap of his fingers.

I turned in his embrace, looking up into the face of my husband.

His scars were still there, but they were no longer marks of trauma; they were medals of a victory hard-won. His eyes were bright, clear, and filled with an endless, protective warmth.

*I am home,* I signed back.

Caleb smiled, that rare, breathtaking smile that still made my heart flutter just as it had that snowy night at Bellamy’s.

He reached down, his hand resting gently over my stomach.

Beneath his palm, barely noticeable to anyone else, was a tiny, miraculous swell—the new life growing within me, our child, who would never know the terror of a mobster’s shadow, who would grow up surrounded by love, truth, and two languages.

Caleb leaned down, kissing my lips softly, tenderly, under the warm Chicago sun.

“I love you, Hannah,” he spoke aloud, his voice steady, proud, and free.

“I love you, Caleb,” I whispered back.
