Chapter 18 - Unmasking the Monster

Six months later, the final legal nail was driven into Dominic Vale’s coffin.

The federal trial of Dominic Vale concluded in the Dirksen Courthouse. With Caleb’s testimony, Marcus’s forensic files, and the evidence extracted from the private safe, the jury deliberated for less than ninety minutes before returning guilty verdicts on forty-two federal counts, including first-degree murder, racketeering, and treason.

Caleb and I attended the sentencing hearing together.

Dominic, now frail, gray, and hunched in his wheelchair, looked like a hollow shell of the terrifying mafia boss who had once commanded an army of killers.

When Judge Vance’s replacement delivered the sentence—three consecutive life terms at ADX Florence, the federal supermax facility in Colorado—Dominic didn't yell. He didn't curse.

He turned his head toward the gallery where Caleb and I sat.

His rheumy, defeated eyes met his son’s.

Caleb didn't look away. But he didn't raise his hand in anger, either.

Caleb simply raised his left hand, showing the simple, elegant platinum wedding band resting on his finger—intertwined with mine.

Dominic saw the ring. He saw the peace, the strength, and the unbroken dignity of the son he had tried to destroy.

A single tear rolled down Dominic’s scarred cheek as the federal marshals wheeled him out through the heavy steel doors, locking him away into eternal oblivion.

The monster was unmasked. And the cycle of generational violence was broken forever.
