Chapter 8 - The Breach from Outside

*BOOM!*

The main lobby doors of Mercy General Hospital were violently blown open from the outside.

High-intensity halogen searchlights swept into the shattered ground floor, slicing through the smoke.

"POLICE! NOBODY MOVE! SWAT, DROP TO YOUR KNEES!"

Dozens of heavily armored tactical officers poured through the entrance, carbines raised, sweeping the corners. Behind them came Sergeant Alvarez, flanked by a squad of federal marshals and an imposing man in a charcoal suit wearing a gold FBI director's badge.

They were prepared for a bloody, drawn-out hostage standoff.

Instead, they found Tom Hadley curled behind the reception desk, his hands clasped over his head, sobbing and repeating the same sentence over and over:

"I surrender! She’s coming for us! She’s coming!"

Sergeant Alvarez rushed forward, his weapon trained on the trembling security chief. "Hadley! Where are the gunmen? Where are the explosives?"

Hadley pointed a shaking finger toward the elevator bank.

"They're... they're all down," Hadley stammered. "The nurse... the quiet nurse from the fourth floor... she destroyed them."

Alvarez stared at him. "What nurse? What are you talking about?"

Suddenly, the elevator doors chimed.

*DING.*

Every SWAT officer in the lobby instantly pivoted, raising their rifles toward the elevator doors.

"WEAPONS READY!" Alvarez barked. "COME OUT WITH YOUR HANDS UP!"

The stainless steel doors slowly slid open.

Standing inside was Sarah Jenkins, holding two newborn babies wrapped in fleece blankets, flanked by six pediatric nurses and Martha, the elderly volunteer.

Beside them, lying tied up like butcher’s meat with fiberglass casting tape, were two heavily armed mercenaries, completely disarmed, groaning in agony with dislocated joints and fractured limbs.

Sarah Jenkins looked at the dozens of police rifles aimed at them and smiled through her tears.

"Hold your fire, boys," Sarah said, her voice shaking with emotion. "The bad guys have already been admitted to intensive care."

The FBI director stepped forward, lowering his sidearm. "Who neutralized these men?"

Martha stepped forward, adjusting her floral cardigan.

"Elena Ward," the old woman said proudly. "And if any of you give her a hard time about violating hospital visiting hours, you'll have to answer to me."

Alvarez looked at the FBI director in utter bewilderment. "Who the hell is Elena Ward?"

The FBI director’s eyes widened slightly as the name registered in his mind. He pulled a classified tablet from his breast pocket, tapped a sequence of biometric security codes, and looked at the screen.

His face drained of color.

"My God," the director breathed. "Call off the tactical assault team immediately. The fourth floor isn't a hostage situation."

"Sir?" Alvarez asked.

The director looked up at the ceiling with profound respect.

"It’s an active sanctuary under the protection of the Department of Defense. Clear this lobby. We're going up to pay our respects."
