Chapter 5 - The Pediatric Wing

On the second floor, the nursery and pediatric ward were enveloped in a suffocating atmosphere of dread.

Eight staff members—nurses, pediatric aides, and an elderly volunteer named Martha—were huddled on the floor behind the main reception desk. Two young mothers holding newborn infants were weeping softly in the corner, desperate to keep their babies quiet.

Standing over them was Commander Drake.

He was a hulking man, well over six feet tall, dressed in full tactical body armor with a sidearm holstered on his chest and an assault rifle hanging from a two-point sling.

Beside him stood Tom Hadley, looking like a man who had sold his soul and was only now realizing the price.

"Drake, please," Hadley pleaded, his hands trembling violently. "You said you just wanted Lewis! Why are we holding these people? If the police breach—"

"Shut up, Hadley!" Drake roared, backhanding the security chief across the face.

Hadley tumbled against the nurse's station, blood dripping from his split lip.

"You brought me into an operation where the target had Sergeant First Class Ward covering his flank!" Drake hissed, his eyes wild. "Do you have any idea who that woman is? She survived Tora Bora! She pulled eleven wounded Rangers out of a burning compound under sniper fire while bleeding from a shrapnel wound in her thigh! She is not a nurse, you idiot—she is a butcher of men who get in her way!"

The captured nurses looked at each other in utter shock.

*Elena? Quiet Elena from the night shift?*

Martha, the elderly volunteer who often shared mints with Elena in the breakroom, covered her mouth in disbelief.

"She’s bluffing," Hadley whimpered from the floor. "She’s just one woman. She doesn't have weapons."

"She has whatever she wants," Drake growled, pacing the floor.

He stopped in front of Sarah Jenkins, a twenty-eight-year-old neonatal nurse who was clutching a newborn baby against her chest. Drake leveled his rifle at her forehead.

"One minute left," Drake yelled toward the dark hallway. "Ward! Do you hear me? Bring Vance and the drive, or this mother loses her child!"

Sarah closed her eyes, sobbing hysterically. "Please... please, don't..."

Suddenly, a voice echoed through the ceiling vents above them.

"Put the gun down, Drake."

Drake spun around, raising his rifle toward the acoustic tiles. "Show yourself, Ward!"

"Look at your feet, Drake."

Drake glanced down.

Rolling across the linoleum floor was a small, green plastic bottle.

It was an aerosolized canister of Sevoflurane—a potent, highly volatile halogenated general anesthetic used in the operating theaters.

Attached to the top of the canister was a modified surgical syringe acting as a friction detonator, wired to an emergency defibrillator paddle that Elena had dragged through the maintenance shaft.

"What is that—" Drake began.

*POP.*

The syringe ignited the propellant. A dense, concentrated cloud of fast-acting anesthetic vapor exploded into the corridor between Drake and the hostages.

Drake coughed violently, staggering backward as his eyes began to burn. "Gas! It's gas!"

From the ceiling, two acoustic tiles shattered outward.

Elena Ward dropped into the room like a falling hawk.

She landed squarely on the shoulders of the second mercenary standing guard near the pediatric exit doors. The sheer kinetic force of her descent drove him violently to the ground.

Before he could react, Elena grabbed his helmet chin-strap, twisted it with lethal torque, and delivered a devastating elbow strike directly to his exposed larynx. The man slumped into unconsciousness without uttering a single word.

Drake raised his rifle, aiming through the dispersing chemical fog. "WARD!"

Elena didn't retreat. She grabbed an overturned stainless steel treatment cart and shoved it forward with all her strength.

The heavy steel cart slammed into Drake’s knees, disrupting his aim. A burst of 5.56mm rounds chewed into the ceiling tiles, raining plaster and fiberglass onto the floor.

Elena closed the distance inside his rifle barrel's arc.

She lunged, her combat knife flashing under the emergency lights. She struck Drake’s rifle sling, slicing through the nylon webbing in a single stroke, stripping the heavy weapon from his torso.

Drake was massive, possessing raw brute strength, but Elena was a hurricane of close-quarters combat biomechanics.

Drake threw an overhand right punch aimed to crush her skull. Elena slipped beneath the blow, redirected his momentum by hooking his wrist, and drove her palm heel directly into his elbow joint against the hinge.

*CRACK.*

Drake howled in fury as his left arm buckled.

"Get out!" Elena shouted to the nurses and mothers behind her. "Take the infants through the laundry stairwell! Move! NOW!"

Sarah Jenkins and the staff didn't hesitate. Grabbing the babies and pulling Martha along, they bolted down the rear emergency escape route toward the secured ground-floor loading dock.

Drake, clutching his fractured arm, backed toward the glass doors of the pediatric balcony. His face was contorted in murderous rage.

"You think you won, Ward?" Drake spat, his hand reaching toward a black remote detonator attached to his tactical harness. "I have this entire wing wired to the hospital’s primary oxygen manifold! If I press this, the whole south wing collapses into the basement!"

Elena stopped.

She stood twenty feet away, her chest rising and falling in steady, controlled respirations.

Behind Drake, cowering against the glass partition, was Tom Hadley.

"Drake... no..." Hadley screamed. "You can't blow the building! We’re still inside!"

"Shut up, dead weight!" Drake snarled, raising the detonator.

His thumb moved toward the red rocker switch.

Elena’s hand dipped into her scrub pocket.

She didn't draw a gun.

She drew a twelve-gauge emergency thoracostomy trocar needle—a six-inch-long, heavy-gauge steel instrument used to pierce chest walls to relieve tension pneumothorax.

With a movement as fast as a striking cobra, Elena whipped her arm forward.

The heavy steel needle cut through the air, whistling with terrifying speed.

It struck Drake’s right hand with pinpoint surgical accuracy, driving straight through his palm and pinning his thumb against the detonator casing before his nerves could send the signal to depress the switch.

Drake shrieked in agony, dropping the remote as blood cascaded from his pinned hand.

Elena surged forward like a missile.
