Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Shadows

"They... they found me, Elena," Colonel Marcus Vance coughed, blood flecking the corners of his lips.
Elena immediately checked his abdominal dressing. The surgical site was holding, but his heart rate on the portable finger pulse oximeter was spiking dangerously—145 beats per minute.
"Don't talk," Elena instructed, adjusting the oxygen flow. "Conserve your oxygen. You're post-laparotomy. You have internal staples holding your liver together."
"The drive..." Vance wheezed, his knuckles whitening as he held her arm. "Vanguard Security. Drake... he sold out our entire strike team in Yemen. He’s liquidating the witnesses. They tracked me to the highway... ran my car off the bridge. If they get that drive, twenty-two active field agents are dead by dawn."
Elena looked down at the titanium drive in her palm.
The puzzle pieces snapped together with terrifying clarity.
Mercy General hadn't been chosen at random. Vance had been driving toward her. He had known she was working the night shift under an alias. He was seeking the only combat medic he knew who could patch him up and keep her mouth shut.
"Elena," Karen stepped forward, tears streaming down her face. "The radio on that man you tied up... it’s talking again."
Elena walked over to the bound mercenary. She picked up his earpiece and held it to her ear.
*"Echo! Bravo! Status, now! The police outside have called in an armored BearCat. Drake says we burn the fourth floor in ten minutes. Set the incendiaries. Nobody leaves."*
Elena pressed the button.
"Drake," Elena said, her voice resonant, terrifyingly calm.
The radio fell dead silent for two seconds.
*"Who the hell is this?"* a deep, gravelly voice answered. The voice of Drake—the leader of the mercenary detachment. *"Where is Echo?"*
"Echo is down with a fractured kneecap and severed tendons," Elena replied. "His weapon is currently aimed at the door. If you send your men up that stairwell, you are sending them into a funnel of fire."
A dark, mocking chuckle rumbled through the receiver.
*"Well, well. Marcus Vance didn't tell me he had a guardian angel. Are you the local SWAT sniper who snuck through the ventilation? Or just a very foolish security guard?"*
"I’m the person who kept your men from bleeding to death in the Kunar Province twelve years ago, Drake," Elena said coldly. "And I’m the person who is going to put you in the morgue if you take one more step up those stairs."
There was an intake of breath on the other end.
*"...Ward?"* Drake whispered, his arrogant tone vanishing in an instant. *"Sergeant First Class Ward? The 'Valkyrie of Delta'? You're alive?"*
"And on duty," Elena answered. "Get your men out of my hospital."
*"I can't do that, Elena,"* Drake said, his voice hardening into ruthless determination. *"There are fifty million dollars resting on that drive Vance is carrying. I don't care if God Almighty is standing in front of bed six. You have five minutes to bring Vance and that drive to the lobby. If you don't... I start executing the nurses and orderlies I gathered on the second floor."*
The line went dead.
Elena closed her eyes for a single heartbeat.
*The second floor. Pediatrics. Postpartum recovery.*
"Elena?" Priya sobbed. "What did he say? What are they going to do?"
Dr. Cole grabbed Elena’s shoulder. "You can't go out there! There are at least three or four of them, heavily armed! You have one pistol and a knife!"
Elena gently removed Ryan’s hand from her shoulder. Her expression was completely devoid of fear.
"Dr. Cole, when a patient presents with multiple arterial lacerations, do you treat the one that’s easy, or do you stop the hemorrhage that will kill the patient first?"
Ryan blinked. "The... the fatal hemorrhage."
"Drake is the hemorrhage," Elena said softly.
She turned to Karen. "Karen, take charge of this floor. If the doors are breached, use the oxygen tanks. Crack the brass regulator valves with a fire extinguisher. The escaping pressure will act as a missile and create an aerosol dispersion blast. If anyone steps through that doorway who isn't wearing blue scrubs, you blind them with the halon fire extinguisher and you do not stop."
Karen looked terrified, but seeing Elena’s unwavering resolve, she squared her shoulders and nodded. "We’ll protect him, Elena. Go."
Elena checked the Glock. Fourteen rounds remaining.
She retrieved a roll of medical tape, wrapped it around the pistol grip for enhanced purchase, secured the tactical flashlight beneath the barrel using adhesive gauze, and slid the combat knife into her waistband.

Then, she stepped out into the black hallway and merged with the dark.
