Chapter 8 - The Smear Campaign Escalates
The next morning, Nora launched phase two of her attack.
By 9:00 a.m., she had booked an interview with a prominent morning podcast run by an influencer friend with over a million listeners. The episode was titled: *“Left at the Altar: Surviving Emotional Narcissists.”*
I listened through Drew’s laptop as Nora’s voice, honeyed and tear-soaked, flooded the quiet cabin.
“I tried so hard to heal his inner child,” she wept. “His father is an elderly gentleman with heart problems. Mason fabricated stories about his childhood just to justify his own emotional unavailability. And when his father came to offer olive branches—pure, unconditional love—Mason couldn't face the truth. He fled like a coward because he preferred to live in a fantasy of victimhood rather than take responsibility as a husband.”
The podcaster, a woman named Chloe, chimed in with breathless outrage: “It sounds like textbook sociopathy, Nora. Ladies, this is why you must never ignore red flags! Men who cut off their mothers without an explanation are always toxic!”
Ten minutes later, the repercussions hit my professional life.
My firm’s senior partner, Marcus Graham, left a frantic message on my work voice mail:
*“Mason, what in God's name is happening on Twitter? Our firm’s reviews are getting bombed with one-star ratings. People are calling our corporate line demanding you be fired from the Asheville Arts Center project. Call me right now.”*
Drew slammed his hand against the desk. “They’re trying to destroy you publicly so you have no leverage left to fight them. If you’re ruined professionally, you won’t have the money or the spine to resist them.”
“Let them dig their hole deeper,” I said calmly.
I opened my laptop and clicked open an encrypted cloud folder titled *“Vance Archive.”*
It contained nine years of scanned emergency room records, audio logs of Richard’s drunken voicemails from my college days, and a deposition from an old high school guidance counselor who had called Child Protective Services on Richard Vance in 2014—a report that my father had used his political connections with the local sheriff to bury.
I attached the files to an email addressed directly to Maya.
