Chapter 13 - Nora’s Fall from Grace

Four days later, Nora’s world disintegrated entirely.

Her agency dropped her. Her mother was removed from the local charity committee after parents protested her complicity in the cover-up.

Drew and I sat in Maya’s high-rise office in Raleigh as the final legal documents were signed.

“The judge granted the restraining order,” Maya announced, setting down a thick stack of court-stamped filings. “Nora Caldwell and Richard Vance are barred from contacting you, approaching your residence, or coming within five hundred feet of your place of work for the next three years. A single violation means immediate arrest.”

“What about the trust?” I asked.

Maya smiled—a genuine, warm smile. “Richard’s attorneys folded this morning. When they saw the paper trail showing he used Nora as a paid proxy to manipulate you, they realized they faced criminal charges for extortion. Richard signed a full waiver. Arthur’s trust is now completely untouched. On your thirtieth birthday, the entire four-point-two million transfers directly to your sole account. And because of the anti-tampering clause, Richard’s two-hundred-thousand-dollar annual royalty has been formally revoked.”

Drew let out a loud whoop of triumph, pumping his fist in the air.

I looked at the legal papers. For years, I thought surviving meant hiding. I thought that keeping the peace meant swallowing the poison, pretending the scars didn't exist, and letting toxic people walk over my dignity just to keep the room quiet.

Nora had tried to force me to bow before my abusers so she could buy a designer lifestyle with blood money.

Instead, she had handed me the hammer that smashed their chains forever.
