Chapter 3 - Nora’s Tearful Live Stream

By 6:00 p.m., the narrative had already been spun.

I was sitting in a modest roadside motel near the Virginia border, a cup of lukewarm diner coffee resting on the laminate nightstand. I turned my work phone on—a secondary device Nora didn’t have the number for—and opened social media.

Drew had sent me a link three minutes earlier.

It was an Instagram video, posted to Nora’s public account, which boasted thirty thousand followers thanks to her lifestyle branding and event-planning career.

The screen showed Nora sitting on the velvet couch in the bridal suite, still wearing her lace bodice. Her hair was artfully disheveled, tears tracing clean paths through her bronzer. Her mother sat beside her, rubbing her shoulder with an expression of performative tragedy.

“I never thought I would have to make a video like this,” Nora began, her voice cracking right on cue. “Today was supposed to be the start of our forever. I wanted to give Mason the one thing he’d been missing his entire life: his family. His sweet parents drove six hours just to reconcile with him. To tell him they loved him. And when Mason found out they were here… he simply disappeared. He walked out on eighty guests, left us with tens of thousands of dollars in unpaid bills, and abandoned me at the altar.”

Her mother chimed in, voice trembling: “A cowardly boy who can’t handle true love or family forgiveness.”

Nora looked directly into the camera lens, eyes wet and glistening. “Mason, if you’re watching this… we don’t hate you. We’re heartbroken. Please get help. Whatever demons you’re running from, running away from the woman who loved you won't save you.”

The comments were already pouring in by the hundreds:

*“What a monster!”*

*“To leave her at the altar like that? Disgusting!”*

*“His poor parents. Look at how much they tried to bridge the gap!”*

I stared at the screen, my chest hollowed out. There was no mention of the speech. No mention of the forced public confession. She had painted me as an emotionally unstable monster who broke her heart out of sheer malice.

And at the very bottom of the post, Nora had tagged my employer’s design firm.
