Chapter 9 - The Final Strike & Reckoning

The rain beat down mercilessly on the concrete docks of Pier 42.

Kenjiro Sato knelt in the filthy puddle, clutching his ribs, gasping for air. Behind him, Hideo and twenty heavily armed Kuroda enforcers formed an unbroken ring of steel, weapons lowered at the vanquished traitor.

High in the observation tower, Claire and Ivy watched the entire scene through the high-powered glass. Ivy kept her headset pressed tight against her ear.

"Wait, Ren!" Ivy cried into the mic.

Ren paused, his finger resting on the trigger of his gun, inches from Sato’s skull. *"What is it, Ivy?"*

Ivy zoomed the lens directly onto Sato’s face. Despite being on his knees, Sato was looking past Ren, his eyes darting toward the open cargo doors of an empty container fifteen yards behind them.

"Inside the dark box behind you!" Ivy screamed. "There’s a man hiding in the shadows! He has a laser sight pointed at your chest! Sato’s mouth just said... *'Shoot him now, you fool!'*"

Ren didn't ask questions. In a fraction of a second, he spun on his heel, dropping to one knee while firing three rounds through the corrugated steel wall of the container.

A stifled cry sounded from within the container, followed by the clatter of a heavy sniper rifle hitting the wooden floorboards, and a body slumping forward into the light. The hidden assassin fell limp, dead before he touched the ground.

Sato gasped, his final, desperate gambit shattered. He looked up at Ren with eyes full of superstitious terror.

"How...?" Sato choked out, his voice trembling. "How do you see everything? Are you a demon, Ren?!"

Ren slowly turned back to Sato, his face devoid of emotion.

"I am not a demon, Kenjiro," Ren said, his voice carrying over the sound of the rain. "I simply have a guardian angel who speaks every language of your deceit."

Ren did not pull the trigger.

Instead, he lowered his weapon, stepped back, and looked at Hideo.

"Do not kill him," Ren ordered coldly. "Strip him of the Sato name. Hand him, along with all the financial records Ivy helped us recover from Morimoto’s accounts, directly to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Maritime Trade Commission. Kenjiro Sato will spend the next forty years in a federal penitentiary in Colorado, rotting in a concrete box where he will never see the Pacific Ocean again."

Sato screamed curses as Hideo’s men dragged him away into the back of a tactical van.

Ren stood alone on the pier for a moment, letting the cold rain wash the grime and gunpowder from his skin. He reached up, tapped his comms headset, and whispered:

"Ivy. Claire. It is finished. Come down."

Ten minutes later, the armored elevator of the Port Authority building opened at the ground level.

Claire and Ivy stepped out into the mist. Claire’s legs gave out, and she sank to her knees on the damp asphalt, her heart overflowing with a relief so profound it felt like dying and being reborn.

Ren walked toward them. His coat was gone, his shirt soaked through, his knuckles bruised, but his eyes were softer than anyone in San Francisco had ever seen them.

Ivy didn't walk. She broke into a full run, her small boots splashing through puddles, throwing her arms around Ren’s waist with all the strength in her tiny body.

Ren dropped to his knees, wrapping his arms around the little girl, lifting her off the ground and burying his face into her damp copper hair.

"Thank you, little bird," Ren whispered, his voice thick with uncharacteristic emotion. "You saved me. You saved all of us."

"You came back," Ivy whispered against his ear. "Your mouth promised you would, and it was true."

Ren carried Ivy over to Claire, extending a hand to help the weeping mother to her feet. When Claire took his hand, Ren didn't let go. He pulled her gently toward him, his thumb brushing a tear from her cheek.

"It’s over, Claire," Ren said softly. "The war is done. You are safe. Both of you."

Claire looked from Ren to her daughter, smiling through her tears as the first golden rays of the morning sun began to pierce the Pacific clouds over the bay.
