Chapter 5 - An Ambush in the Mist

The morning sun over the Pacific was swallowed by a thick, suffocating blanket of San Francisco fog.

By 10:00 AM, Ren knew the Pacific Heights estate was no longer safe. Morimoto’s arrest meant that Kenjiro Sato’s network in the city would be operating on scorched-earth protocols. Sato had failed twice in twelve hours; his next move would be total, indiscriminate violence.

"We move to the Redwood Fortress," Ren commanded Hideo as they prepared the convoy in the underground bunker. The Kuroda family owned a sprawling, off-grid coastal sanctuary deep in the ancient redwood forests of Mendocino County, equipped with satellite uplinks, autonomous power, and a helipad. "Three decoy convoys head south toward Silicon Valley. We take the northern route across the Golden Gate."

Claire was dressed in warm, heavy civilian clothes provided by the estate staff—a soft cashmere sweater, durable boots, and a warm down coat. She held Ivy’s hand with an iron grip. Ivy wore a red woolen beanie that covered her copper braid, looking small and fragile amidst the towering, armored guards.

"Claire," Ren said, stepping up to her as the tactical team loaded assault gear into the trunk of a customized armored Suburban. "Stay low in the vehicle. No matter what happens, do not leave the backseat."

"Ren," Claire said, using his first name for the first time. Her hazel eyes, so much like her daughter’s, were wide with maternal intensity. "Promise me she survives this."

Ren Kuroda looked into Claire’s eyes, and for a moment, the hardened syndicate boss disappeared. "I will die before any harm touches either of you, Claire. I swear it on my life."

The heavy steel gates rolled upward, and the three armored black SUVs surged out into the damp, gray morning, tires biting into the wet pavement.

They crossed through the Presidio, the majestic red towers of the Golden Gate Bridge looming ahead, disappearing into a wall of ghost-white sea fog. Traffic was sparse due to the heavy weather. The wind off the bay howled against the reinforced windows of the Suburban.

Then, halfway across the suspension span, the trap snapped shut.

A massive flatbed commercial truck suddenly swerved across all three northbound lanes three hundred yards ahead, deliberately flipping on its side with a deafening screech of grinding metal, completely blocking the roadway.

"Brake! Brake!" Hideo yelled from the passenger seat.

The lead SUV slammed on its anti-lock brakes, sliding to a halt twenty yards from the smoking wreckage. Before the convoy could reverse, two armored dump trucks roared out from the fog behind them, ramming together to crush the rear SUV and sealing the exit.

"Ambush!" Hideo roared, pulling a submachine gun from beneath his seat. "Bridge ambush! They sacrificed their own supply routes to bottle us here!"

From behind the overturned flatbed, two dozen men in tactical gear with assault rifles emerged, advancing in disciplined firing lines, unleashing a terrifying hail of automatic fire. Bullets pounded against the Suburban’s armored glass like steel hail, spiderwebbing the outer laminate layers but failing to penetrate the military-grade polycarbonate core.

"Get down!" Claire screamed, throwing herself across Ivy on the floorboard of the backseat, taking the brunt of the kinetic vibrations with her own trembling body.

Ren drew his weapons, his eyes blazing with lethal calm. "Hideo, smoke grenades on the western rail. We push through on foot toward the maintenance catwalks. We cannot stay in this metal cage if they bring out RPGs."

As if answering his thought, a mercenary on top of the overturned truck hoisted an anti-tank rocket launcher onto his shoulder.

"RPG!" Hideo screamed.

"Out! Now!" Ren kicked his door open into the roaring wind and fog, laying down suppressive fire with his sidearm.

Ren grabbed Claire by the arm, hauling her out of the vehicle, while Hideo scooped Ivy into his massive, armored chest. They dove behind the reinforced concrete barrier of the bridge sidewalk just as a high-explosive rocket struck the front engine block of the Suburban, erupting into a catastrophic fireball of shrapnel and black smoke.

Gunfire thundered across the bridge deck, echoing off the steel cables. Ren’s surviving guards formed a perimeter, exchanging lethal fire with Sato’s strike force through the thick, swirling fog.

Ivy, pressed against the cold steel railing of the bridge with the Pacific Ocean churning hundreds of feet below, suddenly grabbed Ren’s sleeve with astonishing force.

"Ren!" she shouted over the roar of gunfire and wind.

"Stay down, Ivy!" Ren yelled back, reloading his weapon with lightning speed.

"Look at the red tower!" Ivy pointed up through the swirling fog toward the eastern suspension cable anchor. "The man with the binoculars! Look at his mouth!"

Ren squinted through the mist. High above the firefight, perched on a structural girder eighty feet in the air, a spotter with a high-powered scope was directing the ambushers via radio.

"What is he saying?!" Ren demanded, keeping his head beneath the concrete rim.

Ivy watched the distant, microscopic movement of the spotter's mouth framed against the gray sky.

*"Detonate the bridge cables on the west side,"* Ivy recited in rapid Japanese, her eyes tracing every syllable. *"Drop the middle section into the water. Sato said do not let Ren leave the bridge alive, even if everyone falls."*

Hideo’s face turned white beneath the soot. "Madness... Sato is going to destroy the Golden Gate Bridge itself!"

"They planted C4 on the primary suspension anchor beneath our feet," Ren realized with horrific clarity. "They don't care about collateral damage. They're going to drop this entire span into the bay."

Ivy pointed again, her finger steady despite the chaos. "The man on the tower! He has the remote control in his left pocket! He said... *'Three minutes until the timer arms itself!'*"

Ren Kuroda didn't hesitate. He looked at Claire, who was holding her daughter with fierce, unbreakable devotion.

"Hold her," Ren told Claire.

Then, Ren stepped out from behind cover, discarded his sidearm, and grabbed a high-precision semi-automatic marksman rifle from a fallen guard. Standing tall in the howling gale, heedless of the bullets striking the railing around him, Ren aimed straight up into the fog, adjusted for twenty knots of crosswind, and fired three deliberate shots into the mist.

Eighty feet above, the spotter slumped, his body tumbling from the high steel girder, crashing down onto the empty roadway below with the detonator shattering harmlessly against the asphalt.

A Kuroda tactical helicopter suddenly tore through the fog bank above the bay, its twin miniguns chewing the remaining mercenary vehicles to shreds.

The ambush was broken.

Ren lowered the smoking rifle, turning back to Claire and Ivy. He knelt before them, his hands shaking slightly from adrenaline. Claire threw her arms around Ren’s neck in an instinctual surge of gratitude, weeping uncontrollably. Ren froze for half a second before his arms wrapped securely around both mother and daughter, holding them against his chest as the fog began to clear over the bay.
