Chapter 7 - The Trap at the Dragon's Gate

The fifty-inch monitor mounted above the hearth flickered to life.

Kenjiro Sato appeared on screen. He sat in an ornate leather chair inside a dimly lit industrial office, surrounded by armed retainers. He was forty years old, with slicked-back graying hair, a sharp, cruel face, and dead, unblinking eyes that mirrored a reptile’s.

*"Cousin Ren,"* Sato began, his voice dripping with venomous mockery in Japanese. *"You run well. Hiding like a frightened dog in the woods with your little red-haired pet."*

Ivy stood up from the rug, walking quietly to stand beside Ren. Her small hand slipped naturally into his, her fingers curling around his thumb. Ren did not let go.

*"You think you are safe in Mendocino?"* Sato sneered. *"I hold your lifeblood, Ren. One hour ago, my men seized Pier 42 at the Port of San Francisco. We have taken sixty-four dockworkers and your terminal managers hostage. If you do not arrive at Warehouse 9 alone by midnight tonight to sign over the Kuroda maritime rights, I will execute one worker every five minutes and dump their bodies into the bay."*

Sato leaned closer to the camera, an ugly sneer curling his thin lips.

*"And Ren... bring the little girl. I want to see the eyes of the child who thought she could spit on the Sato clan. If she isn't with you, the entire harbor burns."*

The screen snapped to black.

Silence suffocated the room. Hideo swore viciously under his breath, kicking the leg of the conference table. "Pier 42 is our main commercial artery! Sixty-four innocent dockworkers... Sato knows our family code. He knows your father would never let innocent workers die for his pride."

"It's a slaughterhouse trap," Claire said, panic rising in her voice as she pulled Ivy back toward her. "He wants you to walk into an ambush! You can't take Ivy there!"

"I would cut my own throat before I handed Ivy to Sato," Ren said, his voice flat, vibrating with volcanic rage.

"Ren," Ivy’s small voice piped up.

Everyone stopped and looked down at her.

"The bad man on the TV," Ivy said, her hazel eyes completely calm. "He was talking, but behind him, there was another man standing near the window. He was speaking on a radio to someone else."

Ren knelt down beside her instantly. "What did the man near the window say, Ivy?"

Ivy closed her eyes for a brief second, recalling the tiny visual details of the video feed. "He said... *'The hostages aren't at Warehouse 9. They put them in the dry-dock container ship, the Silver Star. Warehouse 9 is packed with fifty barrels of aviation fuel. The moment Ren walks through the front doors, the sniper on the gantry will detonate the fuel from half a mile away.'*"

Hideo froze. "The *Silver Star*? That's docked at Berth 3, nearly a mile south of Warehouse 9!"

"He isn't planning a parley at all," Ren said, a lethal, chilling smile spreading across his face. "He wants me to go to Warehouse 9 to die in a firestorm, while he executes our workers at Berth 3 to ensure there are no witnesses to his takeover."

Ren stood up, turning to Hideo. "Mobilize our entire tactical reserve. Call the offshore patrol boats from our Alameda depot. We split into two teams."

"Boss?"

"Team One, led by you, Hideo, breaches the *Silver Star* at Berth 3 under cover of darkness and liberates our workers," Ren commanded. "Team Two goes to Warehouse 9."

"Ren, you can't go to Warehouse 9!" Claire cried out, grabbing his arm. "You heard Ivy! It's rigged with fuel!"

"I am going to Warehouse 9, Claire," Ren said, looking down at her with steady, burning determination. "Because Sato's sniper is waiting for a man in a black coat to walk through those doors. And while he watches those doors, I am going to climb that gantry and cut his throat myself."

He turned back to Ivy, kneeling once more to eye level with the child.

"Little bird," Ren said gently. "I need your eyes one last time. From the high observation tower overlooking the harbor, through our spotting scope, I need you to be my guardian angel. Can you do that for me?"

Claire looked at her daughter, terrified. But Ivy looked at Ren, her small face radiating an unshakeable, profound bravery.

"I won't let them hurt you, Ren," Ivy said firmly. "I can see everything."
