Chapter 7 - The Confrontation at the Grand Hotel
The Charleston Grand Hotel was the pinnacle of old-world Southern luxury. Beneath massive crystal chandeliers, high society drank afternoon tea while string quartets played softly in the background.
In the private lounge of the hotel, Chloe Montgomery sat on a velvet settee, sipping a mimosa. She was twenty-seven, blonde, impeccably dressed in a pastel Chanel suit, and radiating the careless confidence of a woman who believed she had secured her fortune.
She had received a text from Daniel’s personal assistant an hour ago, telling her that an "urgent settlement meeting" had been arranged in the private parlor. Chloe assumed Daniel had finally resolved the issue with his pathetic, mousy wife.
The doors opened, and Emily stepped inside.
Chloe paused, lowering her champagne glass. A smirk pulled at the corner of her lips.
"Well, well," Chloe said, crossing her slender legs. "The runaway cook. I saw the news, Emily. Quite a dramatic exit yesterday. Did you come here to beg me to leave Daniel alone?"
Emily walked slowly toward the table, her hands resting calmly in her jacket pockets. Julian Vance followed behind her, flanked by two armed detectives from the state financial crimes division.
"You look comfortable, Chloe," Emily said smoothly, pulling out a chair opposite her and sitting down.
Chloe rolled her eyes. "Look, Emily, let’s be adults here. Daniel doesn't love you. He never did. You were a useful little workhorse who managed his paperwork. But a man of Daniel’s stature needs a woman of class beside him. Once Daniel sorts out his legal issues with your father, we’re leaving for Miami. So if you're here to make a scene—"
"Daniel isn't going to Miami, Chloe," Emily interrupted softly.
Chloe laughed. "Oh? And who is going to stop him? You?"
Julian stepped forward, dropping a thick stack of papers onto the table between Chloe’s mimosa and her designer handbag.
"The State of South Carolina," Julian said. "Along with the Federal Asset Recovery Task Force."
Chloe’s laughter died in her throat. She looked down at the documents.
"What is this?"
"That," Emily said, leaning forward, "is a formal seizure notice for the marina penthouse in Miami. Along with a freeze order on *Apex Horizon LLC*."
Chloe’s face paled slightly, but she tried to maintain her smug composure. "You can't touch that money. It’s an offshore account. It’s in my name!"
"It was funded with embezzled corporate capital belonging to Carter Capital," Julian replied coldly. "Under federal law, that makes you a co-conspirator in grand larceny, wire fraud, and money laundering."
The two detectives stepped forward. One of them pulled out a gold badge.
"Chloe Montgomery?" the lead detective said. "You are formally named as a person of interest in a multi-million-dollar corporate theft investigation. Your passport has been flagged, your domestic accounts are frozen, and you are barred from leaving the state."
Chloe jumped to her feet, knocking her mimosa over. The orange liquid spilled across the velvet cushions.
"No! That's impossible! Daniel told me that money was clean! He said it was his personal bonus!"
"Daniel lied to you," Emily said, her voice dripping with pity. "Just like he lied to me. He used you to hide the money he stole from my father. And now, Chloe, every single cent you thought was yours is being reclaimed."
Emily stood up, leaning in until her face was inches from Chloe’s panic-stricken eyes.
"And here is the best part," Emily whispered. "Daniel’s bail was set at five million dollars cash this afternoon. His mother has zero dollars. His company is gone. The only person who had access to enough liquid funds to post his bail was you... through Apex Horizon."
Chloe gasped, realizing the trap.
"And now," Emily continued with a cruel, beautiful smile, "that account is locked. Daniel is going to sit in a federal holding cell for the next eight months awaiting trial. And you, Chloe, are about to be evicted from this hotel because your credit card was just declined five minutes ago."
As if on cue, the hotel manager appeared at the parlor door with two security guards.
"Miss Montgomery," the manager said firmly. "Your payment method has failed. We must ask you to settle your balance immediately or vacate the premises."
Chloe looked between the detectives, the hotel staff, and Emily’s icy, triumphant gaze.
The reality of her total destruction hit her like a tidal wave. She sank back onto the ruined sofa, burying her face in her manicured hands, sobbing with the exact same helpless desperation that Margaret had displayed hours earlier.
Emily turned on her heel and walked out of the parlor, her heart light and her head held high.
"Julian," Emily said as they entered the grand corridor.
"Yes, Emily?"
"What's next on our schedule?"
Julian checked his watch, a fierce, satisfied grin spreading across his face.
"At 3:00 PM, the court-ordered auction of Margaret Whitmore’s luxury assets begins at the municipal warehouse. And I believe she is currently standing outside the gate in the rain, hoping someone will bid on her jewelry."

Emily smoothed her lapels. "Let’s go buy my mother-in-law's diamonds."
