Chapter 5 - The Social Exile

By midday, the video of Daniel Whitmore being led out of his corporate headquarters in handcuffs had gone viral across every social media platform in the country.

The headline on *Bloomberg* read: **CARTER HEIRESS RECLAIMS CONTROL: WHITMORE DEVELOPMENT COLLAPSES UNDER DOMESTIC ABUSE SCANDAL.**

The footage from the front lobby was devastating. Margaret Whitmore was seen sobbing uncontrollably, covering her face with an expensive silk scarf as reporters thrust microphones into her space. Daniel, disheveled, red-faced, and handcuffed behind his back, screamed obscenities at the cameras until the marshals pushed him into the back of a police cruiser.

In the exclusive gated enclave of *The Oaks*, where Margaret had reigned as the undisputed queen of high society for four decades, the fallout was instantaneous and merciless.

Margaret sat alone in the cavernous, quiet mansion. Daniel was currently being held without bail at the county detention center, Julian Vance having personally argued that Daniel’s violent outburst and flight risk warranted immediate remand.

Margaret picked up her landline phone, dialing the home of Evelyn Sinclair—her closest confidante and the president of the Charleston Preservation Gala.

The phone rang four times before Evelyn answered.

"Evelyn! Thank heavens you picked up!" Margaret cried, her voice breathless and theatrical. "You cannot imagine the horrors that dreadful girl has inflicted on us! She orchestrated a complete coup! She set Daniel up! We must organize an emergency statement for the committee—"

"Margaret," Evelyn’s voice was cool, distant, and completely stripped of warmth. "Do not call this number again."

Margaret stopped mid-sentence, blinking in disbelief. "What? Evelyn, it’s me! Margaret!"

"I saw the video, Margaret. We all did," Evelyn said flatly. "And more importantly, my husband received a personal memo from Alexander Carter’s office this morning. Carter Capital is funding our hospital wing, Margaret. Three hundred million dollars. If our committee associates with you or your son, that endowment will be pulled immediately."

"Evelyn, you can't be serious! We've been friends for thirty years!"

"In our world, Margaret, money is blood. And right now, you are bleeding out. Goodbye."

The line went dead.

Margaret slammed the receiver down, her chest heaving. She reached for her cell phone, dialing her personal banker at Southern Trust.

"Arthur! Arthur, I need you to transfer fifty thousand dollars from my secondary trust into Daniel’s bail fund immediately!"

"Mrs. Whitmore," the banker said with strained politeness. "I regret to inform you that your accounts have been placed under a temporary administrative freeze."

"On whose authority?!" Margaret shrieked.

"On the authority of the Federal Bankruptcy Court and Carter Capital, who hold a primary lien against all personal guarantees signed by you and your son for the Harbor project loans. Your credit cards have been deactivated. Your personal lines of credit have been canceled."

"How am I supposed to buy food?! How am I supposed to pay my staff?!"

"I suggest you make other arrangements, Mrs. Whitmore," Arthur replied before disconnecting.

Margaret threw the phone against the wall. It shattered into a dozen plastic pieces.

At that exact moment, a loud knock sounded at the front door.

Margaret gasped, her eyes lighting up with frantic hope. "Daniel? Did they let him out?!"

She rushed down the grand curved staircase, her slippers sliding across the marble floor where only twenty-four hours earlier Emily had been dragged. She threw open the heavy oak doors.

It was not Daniel.

Standing on the porch was a tall, stern-looking woman in a navy suit, holding an official clipboard, flanked by four men in moving uniforms.

"Margaret Whitmore?" the woman asked.

"Yes! Who are you?!"

"I am Sarah Lin, senior assets manager for Carter Capital," the woman said coldly. "This property, along with all furnishings, artwork, and fixtures, was collateralized under the 2021 restructuring bond signed by Daniel Whitmore. The foreclosure order has been signed by Judge Thornton."

Sarah Lin pulled a bright red eviction notice from her folder and slapped it onto the center of the mahogany door.

"You have twenty-four hours to vacate the premises, Mrs. Whitmore. You may take one suitcase of personal clothing. Everything else belongs to the Carter estate."

Margaret felt the world spin. Her vision blurred around the edges.

"This is my home!" she screamed, her voice cracking into hysteria. "My husband bought this house! My son lives here! You cannot throw me onto the street!"

Sarah Lin looked past Margaret into the opulent foyer, her face expressionless.

"Miss Carter sends her regards," Sarah said quietly. "She noted that sixty dishes was too much for one woman to cook. But packing one suitcase should be well within your capabilities."
