Chapter 6 - The Paper Trail of Betrayal
While Margaret’s world was crumbling to dust, Emily sat in the high-tech conference room of Carter Enterprises' regional headquarters.
Across from her sat Julian Vance and a team of six forensic accountants who had been analyzing Daniel Whitmore’s personal and corporate hard drives for the past fourteen hours.
Alexander sat at the head of the table, sipping an espresso, watching his daughter with quiet admiration. Emily was no longer the hesitant girl who had hidden her pain. She moved through the financial spreadsheets with the clinical precision of a seasoned CEO.
"Look at this, Julian," Emily said, tapping her pen against a highlighted section of a ledger from two years ago. "The shell company, *Apex Horizon LLC*. Daniel told me this was a vendor for concrete supply."
Julian leaned over, his sharp eyes scanning the digital transaction logs. Within seconds, a dark frown settled over his features.
"That's not a concrete supplier," Julian said, his voice dropping into a dangerous register. "Apex Horizon is an offshore account registered in the Cayman Islands. And look at the authorized beneficiary."
Julian tapped the screen, expanding the corporate registry documents.
Emily’s breath caught in her throat.
The registered beneficiary was not Daniel.
It was a woman named Chloe Montgomery.
"Chloe Montgomery?" Alexander asked, his brow furrowing. "Who is that?"
Emily felt a sickening wave of cold wash over her, followed instantly by a white-hot fury. "Chloe was the senior interior designer Daniel hired for the Harbor project three years ago. Margaret always raved about her. She said Chloe was 'from a respectable family with real southern breeding.'"
Julian quickly brought up Chloe Montgomery’s personal banking records through an expedited court subpoena.
Over the past twenty-four months, more than four million dollars had been funneled from Whitmore Development's operational funds into Chloe’s offshore account.
And that wasn't all.
Julian pulled up the deed to a three-million-dollar luxury penthouse overlooking the marina in Miami.
Purchased fourteen months ago.
Under the joint names of Daniel Whitmore and Chloe Montgomery.
"He wasn't just stealing from the company," Julian whispered, looking up at Emily with fierce, protective fury. "He was preparing to drain the business dry, declare bankruptcy, abandon the debt on you, and flee to Florida with his mistress."
Alexander stood up so violently that his chair crashed against the wall behind him. The billionaire’s face was dark with murderous rage.
"I will put him in a concrete cell for the rest of his natural life," Alexander roared, his voice shaking the glass walls of the conference room. "I will ensure he never sees the sun again!"
"No, Daddy," Emily said.
Her voice was calm. Unnaturally calm.
Alexander stopped, looking down at his daughter.
Emily stood up, smoothing the front of her jacket. There were no tears in her eyes now. The last shred of lingering nostalgia, the last phantom ache of the love she had once felt for Daniel Whitmore, had just been completely, permanently incinerated.
"Putting him in a cell is too easy, Daddy," Emily said, her voice freezing the air in the room. "He wanted to run away to his penthouse with his mistress using my father’s money? Let’s make sure his mistress knows exactly what he’s worth now."
She looked at Julian. "Where is Miss Montgomery right now?"
Julian checked his tablet. "She checked into the Charleston Grand Hotel this morning. She’s waiting for Daniel to make bail."
Emily smiled—a smile so cold and brilliant it could have cut diamonds.

"Julian, prepare an emergency asset seizure warrant for the Miami penthouse. And have the hotel staff escort Miss Montgomery to the Grand Ballroom. I think it’s time she and I had a little conversation about Daniel’s future."
