Chapter 7 - The Final Audit
While Evelyn built her new life in Maine, the wreckage of Whitaker Enterprises reached its inevitable conclusion in Manhattan.
In July 2027, the Securities and Exchange Commission, armed with the unredacted 2012 structural reports released by the Mercer Trust, launched a sweeping federal investigation into Whitaker Enterprises.
The East River hotel expansion project was permanently canceled by the city, resulting in a seventy-million-dollar loss for the firm.
Grant Whitaker was forced to resign as CEO by his own board of directors. To cover the mounting legal fees and debt liquidations, he was forced to sell the Fifth Avenue penthouse, his sports cars, and his private yacht at public auctions.
Lila Monroe, whose modeling contracts had evaporated following the scandal, had left New York for Los Angeles six months earlier, refusing to answer Grant’s calls.
On a rainy Tuesday afternoon in August, Grant sat in a small, rented one-bedroom apartment in Queens, looking at a copy of Architectural Digest.
On the cover was a stunning photograph of the restored Bar Harbor Maritime Library.
Standing on the grand granite steps of the library, framed by the bright blue ocean and glowing autumn sun, was Evelyn.
She wore a tailored white wool coat, her dark hair blowing in the breeze, holding hands with Nathan Cross, who stood beside her looking tall, proud, and completely devoted.
The headline across the cover read: “Evelyn Mercer: The Visionary Restoring New England’s Heritage.”
Grant stared at her face on the magazine cover for a long, suffocating hour.
There was no sadness in her eyes. No trace of the lonely, isolated woman who had waited for his car to arrive at 3:00 a.m. She looked whole, radiant, and completely out of his reach.

He closed the magazine, set it on his small wooden table, and looked out at the rain falling over Queens, realizing that the greatest mistake of his life hadn't been losing his company or his fortune.
It had been failing to see the diamond sitting right beside him in the dark.
